Truck died, strangely

Truck died, strangely
About an hour ago I started the truck to warm it before heading to work. It ran for a minute and then I put it on high idle. 3-4 minutes later I could hear the RPM's going all over the place, went out and shut it down. Now, it won't start, only crank.
When I went outside it was smoking white. Not a strong fuel or coolant smell, it smelled like it usually does(7.3 exhaust has a smell to it, like a personality), just had color to it. When the RPM's were fluctuating the sound was normal (like it was being controlled by me in the cab), no knocks, sputters, or out of the ordinary noises.
I pulled the fuel filter just see look and it was waxy as if it were winter, it's 65 outside, that was unusual. I'm getting another filter. I'm also going to look at the HPOP res. level, triple check oil level (was full at 7 this mornin'), verify fuel level (had 1/2 tank when it was started), and drain fuel bowl just to be sure.
Any other suggestions on what to check or possible causes would be helpful. Thanks.

An update. I drained the fuel bowl and replaced the filter. The HPO res. was empty, filled it, cleaned up my mess, and it started right up and backed it out of the driveway onto the street. When I checked the oil and fuel level it was good. Shut it off, and checked the res. again, full. But an hour later it was empty. After a few seconds of cranking, it fired back up. I've learned with this issue I can't have the truck idling in the driveway, it's an incline, without seeing the original issue. Driving down the road, it works just fine. I hate sounding like a dumb**s, but this is confusing and frustrating. Now time to look at fixes.

I dont think the check valve is something that you can replace, but I honestly have never had one apart.
Oil pick up in the oil pan. I really doubt that its that...
You have a leak down issue of some kind.
Ford makes a nice kit to test this, plugs one head off and then the other and such. Wish I had one myself but its spendy.
