Default Looking at 2 trucks any tips on what to look for?

Looking at a 99 F250 and a 2000 F250 with the 7.3 in it this weekend. I was talking with a customer of mine he said to check blow by on the engine. Start it up and take the oil cap off and see if it puffs out a lot of smoke or not. Is this correct?

I already know about the oil pan rust issue to look for that as well.

This is my first diesel vehicle I want it to last a nice long time and I will probably be doing some stuff to it.

Any thing else to look for please let me know Thank you very much

also the 2000 has 241k miles on it and the 99 only has 150k. So I am kind of leary on the 2000 because of the high miles but I guess I will see which one is in better condition.

on the 99 check to see if its an early 99 or a late 99... seeing everything you want to buy for it depends on if its early or late.....

I believe then you flip the cap upside down so its flat and set it back on the tube. If it gets pushed off its got too much blowby. I think thats how it works

They started using the weaker rods in the 99.5 and later trucks
