Looking at 2 trucks any tips on what to look for?

Of the three '01 trucks that I have personally taken the time to check, all of them were PMR engines....and one of them was my own personal 4/01 build engine. The other two were also pre-6/01 build engines. Bill (PHP owner) has a 2001 (not sure of build date) that also has PMRs.

ANY 01 truck is capable of having these connecting rods, as were a few mid-late '00 build engines. Some 01s have forged (according to what I have read from others), but I have yet to see one personally.

My newest PSD is a 2000 model year with a 9/99 build engine. Yes, it's got forged rods. A local body shop owner has a 2000 model year truck with an engine build date of 8-00 and it also has forged rods.

Your best bet is to just check. It doesn't take that much time, it's just a small inconvenience.

now with the pmr's how does that limit you?

If you plan on keeping the truck relatively stock, there aren't much for limits. The problem really starts to show up when you start running aggressive tuning and high (and peaky) cylinder pressures. The PMR rods, while strong, are very brittle and do not "give" as a forged rod will. Forged rods can absorb a bit of shock but PMRs cannot. Certain injectors are prone to higher cylinder pressures than others too.

i believe you're(php) site says the 140 extreme tune is not offered with pmr's. does this mean they really wont handle over a 120 over stock gain? if not would a fluidampr help this? my reason for thinking the fluidampr might help would be it's suppsed to reduce that torque twist

In all honesty, the 100, 120, and 140 tunes will all make about the same HP with stock injectors....and they are not even offered with the 95-97 trucks. The only real differences come in the lower RPM ranges when we command more fuel. The problem with more fuel down low is that it really stresses the components. For argument's sake (not actual real-world values), 100 extra HP at 2000 RPM is 262 ft. lbs. Conversely, 100 extra HP at 2800 RPM is 187 ft. lbs.

The higher the RPM in which the higher HP comes into play actually is a lower torque value.....therefore less stress on the bottom end.

As for the harmonic balancer question...... I don't have any real world data for you.

so its all about when to fuel. has anyone ever really had problems with the pmr's? i forget what they're rated for. i mean unless your buildin a puller i'm guessin they'd be alright as long as you didnt just beat on your truck

The scary part is that I have seen a set of PMRs fail on a stock truck that did nothing but get groceries and pick up kids from soccer practice (not literally, but you get the idea).

It's a toss up. My '01 had 140K on it when the ex-wife ran off with it. I think it's in the mid-160's now and we weren't really that nice to it. It had been "chipped" with various different tuners' programming (including my own learning experiences) since day one. Still purrs like a kitten. Just so there's no question....

1. Western Diesel Performance chip. 80-100 HP.
2. Superchips 1705
3. Edge Evolution (gameboy style)
4. Back to Superchips 1705
5. DP-Tuner
5.5. Oops, forgot about a Hypertech programmer for a few weeks.
6. Back to Evolution
7. My own (Sniper tuning software)
8. My own. (PHP Minotaur tuning software)
9. Stock (once the ex took it).

if she was takin it ya shoulda wrote a nice little custom tune for it ya kno not an explosion but enough to make as many systems fail as possible. i think i'd be too worried to get one. i can't drive a truck not knowing if i have one that could fail at any second

It was either give her the truck or fight her for property/house. Besides, I don't hate her....and she has horses. Kinda hard to pull a horse trailer with a Subaru.

I've already replaced the truck.

now if you hated her it would be an option but good idea. fightin for it just costs a ton of money and time and when your in court you cant be workin so theres more lost money. i wish i never had to get married. yet i'm engaged i'm gonna have to drag this one out as long as possible and i ain't givin up my truck. too many hours and too much blood making it exactly what i want and i'm nowhere near done
