Default New garrett turbo conerns!!

I need a little help before I get anymore excited about the GTP38r that i just received. The turbo shaft has about .010 movement up/down (same direction a little kids teder-toder goes, not in and out) with the clearance between the blade and housing going between .005 and .015 with feeler gauges. The in/out feels tight, nothing like the up/down..

This is my first in-hand turbo if it's not obvious, but for that kind of $$ i find it hard to believe this kind of play is acceptable??

I will talk to the supplier after I get a handle on what is "normal" for this turbo and then see how it goes?? If this was covered I apologize, I did every combination of searches and nothing talked about up/down, only the in-out play.

thanks again.

Normal... you have no oil in the bearings yet. Once under oil pressure everything tightens up.

Install away!

LOL... Thanks I think...

Make sure before installing the turbo you tighten up the wastegate a bit, they come from the factory loose as hell...

There is a plug in the center section on top. Throw some thread sealant on that plug, or else u will leak

Default It's IN!!! :)

Just an update:

after 2x calling the supplier but never getting the "tech guy", I gave up on the supplier confirming that the up/down play in the shaft was normal, but with CSIPSD conferting advice, I put it in. I don't want to say I'm "green" but it's been 20+ yrs since I used the dusty craftsman tool chest!!

What a PITA My chest still hurts from laying on top of that beast!! (or maybe it's because I fell off the chair I was standing on to get up/in once or twice)

It all started because my up-pipes were leaking and while I was going to do the up-pipes, why not do a few more items I was meaning too!; diesel lite boots, CCV fix (Racor 4500), EBV, TURBO, Hi-output exhaust housing, bellowed up-pipes and cermic coat everything! (even the SS 4" down pipe) This is not a _1_ person Job!! To make it even worse, I had to ask my wife to Help (what a time to have a fight with the wife the night before about the truck)

1st test drive (for ice cream with kids) one of those beatiful IC boots blew off Tighted the crap out of all them connections and good to go (forgot the Riffraf inserts for the intake manifold)

EGT gets to 1k fast? Plan of taking the 5th wheel next week so I'll give the Mods a better test (or my patients if it doesn't work)

The stock 1.00 was all that were availble, even WTB classified adds were posted with no luck trying to get a 1.15 housing 4 weeks ago

Maybe on the next rouind of up-grades I'll give the larger housing a try

(after 1+ hours, I took the turbo back off and bolted the up-pipe(s) collector on 1st and then connected the up-up pipes to that, I'll try the "foot" technique next time im boosting 37 lbs with no problems now
I WAS hitting 37lbs with the stock turbo and leaking up-pipes Today I got into it a little, only 30lbs of boost tops

Nothing like BAM!! to wreck a good test drive
