Advice on a 2005 F350 Turbo HD
Hello all, new guy here,
I'd like some insight on the below vehicle I'm thinking of buying. 1st off.....I don't know "JACK" about diesel motors/engines. This is my 1st experience with diesel engines. I was looking for some advice on this particular model before I decide to purchase it. I’ve been talking to people about this vehicle and I’ve gotten mixed responses…most have been simply “don’t do it”. I’ve been told that this particular year engine model has had lots of issues and would not be worth making the investment. I’ve been driving it around for the past few days and as far as I can tell it runs pretty good…the fuel mileage is really bad though (13 per gallon), don’t know if this is normal. I know that there are probably lots of diehard Ford fans here but who better to get advice from then long time owners. Will I be shooting myself in the foot if I purchase this vehicle?
2005 F350 HD Turbo (Lariat) 4x4, four door, long bed, 187000 miles, EGR has been deleted, performance chip installed.
-Don’t know engine size (6.0 I think)
-Ran a code reader on it and returned 16 codes: EGR issues (because its deleted I’m assuming) a variety of injector faults, variety of glow plug faults, fuel level reading faults, cam miss aligned or something, along with others.
-I’m assuming it’s manufactured by international
Thanks in advance

sounds like a lot of work to me when the egr was done it it was done corectly it shouldn't be throwing the egr code. and it shouldn't be throwing the code with the programer. the 6.0 are a good motor but they love the cash. fuel injector faults: if they are still stock then they need to be replaced if thier throwing a code. if thier bigger injectors then you could get a code same with glow plugs if thier factory then they need to be replaced. with those two alone your looking at possible 3 -5 grand. if your getting it for a screaming price then it could be worth getting it and maybe puttin some fatter injectors in it, maybe a bigger turbo and having a truck that will haul ***. if your looking at it to have as a dail driver to and from work and not wanting to put alot of money into it maybe not so much then. if you do get it let us know how it goes also if you havnt purchased yet and your getting it from a dealer make them replace all that and then you should be good

The asking price is $15000.
dkapp0802: yup that is pretty consistent with some of the comments I've been getting. I'd love to get that truck but from what I've been hearing the 2005 turned out to be kind of a bad design. Plus, I'm really concerned about the very high mileage. Dang shame. I'm leaning torward not getting it.
Thoughts?

I agree.....think I'm not going to buy this one after all. Too many negative things I've discovered while driving and asking for advice. I just realized....while driving the truck drifts allot, I'm thinking the steering box is going out and will have to be replaced. Gee's and I thought a boat was expensive.

i bought mine,,, 2007 f250 4x4 cc sb laid out. 6x,xxx miles for 20 out the door. and i love it. even though it just needed a fuel pump and turbo....$3775. good thing for warrentys!!! but the oasis report on mine was 100% clean except for fuel gauge issues. i love my truck. i own a cummins too which i love. but i havent driven it once since i bought the new truck... its awesome.

i love diesel more then any other hobby in the world hands down!!... but if i couldn't work on them myself... i would never buy one ( im way to cheap to spend what places charge to fix them)

Truck needs the proper tuner (SCT with custom tunes) to turn off the check engine light stuff. There are no "chips" for 6.0's.
I bet it just needs a FICM repair to clear up most of those injector codes. I'd be interested in a full list of the trouble codes, but honestly for that price it's not worth diving into something that you know needs work right off the bat.
I would never buy one that had a generic tuner/programmer on it either, as the transmission is basically a ticking time bomb. Especially not knowing how the last owner treated it.
13mpg sounds low, but if I drive like a real a-hole I can get it that low in mine. 15-17 seems to be the avg though.

Here are the codes I got:
p0264 Cylinder 2 injector circuit low
p0267 Cylinder 3 Injector circuit low
p0270 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low code
p0273 Cylinder 5 injector circuit low
p0279 Injector circuit low- cylinder 7
p0282 Injector Circuit Low - Cylinder 8
p0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Range/Performance
p0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction
p0405 EGR Exhaust gas recirculation sensor A circuit low Voltage below a specified range
p0460 Fuel Level Sensor Code: This may be caused by a miscommunication of fuel level status between the instrument cluster and engine computer. This code is set when the engine computer does not see the fuel level dropping it expects.
p0463 FUEL LEVEL SENDER A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT: These codes usually sets when your fuel level sender resister card is dirty, Does not cause any drivabilty concerns but will set a check engine light,
p0611 Fuel Injector Control Module Performance
p0672 Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Circuit Fault
p0674 Cylinder 4 Glow Plug Circuit Fault
p0676 Cylinder 6 Glow Plug Circuit Fault
p0678 Cylinder 8 Glow Plug Circuit Fault
