this motor was out of my 07 F550 repo truck.. it died and they could not get it to run so I put the back up motor in and did a tare down on it.. found it was running with both head gaskest blown and what i think killed it was it had wiped the lobe off the cam. I will get the picks up later tonight.. the question is should I through a new cam and lifters, high and low presure oil pumps and put it in the next one that goes down. or what. keep in mind I have 5 trucks with the 6.0 in them so I like to have one sitting in the shop for a backup.

 

Are you asking if you should get the new parts and put them in the engine that wiped the lobe off? and have that engine become your back up? I definitly would as long as there is no other detectable damage from the head gaskets blown. but thats just me.

As far as the wiped out cam lobe, I would clean the oil passages and everything associated with them. That lobe material went SOMEWHERE and usually, it's circulated throughout the motor via the oil system. Once that is done, you'd have a ready to go spare.

 

That one cylinder is rusted pretty good. Are you running some sort of a tuner on that? Look at the spray pattern on top of that piston there...

 

It is a good idea to replace the lifters, it was most likely a lifter that failed to cause the wiping, Iv'e seen a couple where a roller bearing came out of the lifter ad destroyed the engine oil pump. Like others said, clean all the oil galleys, even the ones in the crank, throw a new set of rod and main bearings in ther and you are good.

 

I saw the spray pattern and noticed it was more prodominate on the 2nd cylinder. Either my eyes are going or there is a hint of it in the 3rd cylinder. Not knowing how long the guts had been exposed to the atmosphere, the rust in that cylinder didn't stand out. I saw it, but...

Oh yeah, what Bob said, too. I over tightened a pedestal rocker arm on a flat tappet cam in a fresh 351W, wasted the lobe AND lifter (then I got 10 stitches in my forehead but that's another story ). Anyway, I only did a cam/lifter swap, a few months later, my crank bearings were wiped out from the FOD in the oil.

 

sounds like a plan.. one of my other motors had studs in it so I will move those over to this motor.. that motor was total stock never had a tune put on it.as for the stray pattern on that piston itcould be that the little bit of coolent that was makeing it into the cylinder was giving it a steam clean.here is a pic of th cam.

 

yeah, judging by the burs on that one lifter I would say it lost the bearing in the roller and the body of the lifter was hitting the lobe.
