Default New! And need some answers!

Just bought an 04 f-350 6.0 powerstroke and want to make some safe power. The person I bought it off of said all I need is an egr delete to "cure" the 6.0. I'm looking into an sct sf3 tuner cause I've heard a lot of good stuff about them. What else could I do to make power before I start to get into the transmission.
Thanks, John

P.S. It's my first diesel so I'm still learning.

Welcome . Egr delete would be my first thing to do along with some gauges to monitor your temps. More power you could start with the tuner, an exhaust without the muffler or cat if you can. that should get you plenty of power unless you want to start changing the injectors or the turbo. If you look up an old thread called more power it will give you a lot of info.

John, that's a vague at best question. Sure that link gives advice to making big power, but realisitically, what ARE your goals? 400-500hp to the tires ain't that hard and is a LOT of fun.

I would suggest GAUGES/monitor, a turbo back exhaust, EGR delete (change the oil cooler while you're in there, I wish I would have), and an SF3/X3 SCT, in that order. I think MKM offers a kit with all of those but gauges.

Since you're going to need all of these anyway should you decide you want more than 400~500hp to the tires, get them out of the way and see how you like the power. I have all of the above and I dig it!

Again, you're response could use some definition. IMO, my truck pounding out a high 13 is making lots of power. I also believe that the stuff I have done to it has made it a better daily driver.

I see water/meth like the little blue bottle that's in my 67 Mustang, it's fun, it works, but it requires attention to not run out.

Usually when people buy a 6.0 and it is stock they do the usual but VERY HELPFUL mods.

-MODS::
Egr delete kit (Dear god do it, it'll save you in the end)
Tuner (I've heard lots of good reviews from SCT and it's programmer personnel)
4" Straightpipe (5" is unneeded unless your running a giant turbo or twins)
Air Intake (Makes turbo more apparent and helps get more air)

We really need to know more about you and your truck. What are your driving habits? How is the truck going to be used? Do you need it for a daily driver, or is it a track toy? What are your power goals? Will you ever tow with this, and if so what is the largest you can see yourself towing?

Water/meth is farther down the list of mods at this time, even knowing as little as I do about your situation. It's not a bad thing, just other things to do first.

I'd start with a coolant flush, a rebuilt oil cooler, and a coolant filter to get the system pumping healthy coolant. Gauges, a good exhaust, and an EGR delete should be next, then go for tuning. We need to know if you plan on punishing this truck or driving like grandma, you may want head studs. Also a rough idea of your budget would help too, but not necessary. We can just throw out ideas and you can run with it. Just need some more info here...

Karl gave some good advice here. Have you ever been in a 400+rwhp truck? They're quite fun. Obviously more power is fun as well, but there's a limit to a daily driven street truck too. You don't need 800hp to bring your kids to school.

When i bought my 03 powerstroke i took the approach of trying to bulletproof and fix known issues with the truck first before really trying to build on the horsepower and torque. The list included; ARP head studs, stock head gaskets, Bulletproof diesel egr cooler, new oil cooler, new icp, ipr sensor, and ebp sensor just to start fresh, sinister coolant filter bypass, amzoil oil filter by pass, adreneline high pressure oil pump, Garrett powermax turbo, blue spring, 6.4 banjos, ditched previous owners Bully dog programmer for SCT with innovative tunes, two new batteries, ficm check etc. Still planning on airdog and i'm sure there is more to come. Being able to monitor fuel pressure, oil temp v.s. water temp etc. is important too. Plan your build, read, research and enjoy! I think maintenance is of the upmost importance on these trucks. i change the oil on my truck every 4000 miles and add Rev X to each change... Often clean egr Fuel filters get changed every other oil change. Has been expensive but it is a hobby for me but I love the truck. Best of luck with ur build!
