HELP just entered this crazy world of the 6.0 power stroke hydro locking issue
i just got a great deal on a 2006 ford e450 6.0 power stroke with 153000 miles, mechanic told the guy it needed all new injectors. i discovered the oil filter housing was cracked causing a safety shutdown. i replaced the housing it, ran beautiful. drove it for about 100 miles then started to smoke a lot, its defiantly not antifreeze, smells like engine oil. while trying to start there is a slight hydro locking and now its to the point while cranking the starter keeps kicking in and out like there a corroded terminal. i cleaned all terminals even ran an independent ground to the engine still no change, also the gauges erratically go up and down during cranking. lots of black carbon coming out of exhaust. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A bad injector can cause hydrolocking but not common, most of the time it's either a bad headgasket or even a failed EGR cooler letting coolant into the cylinders. Keep a close eyey on the coolant level. If they were telling you all injectors were bad then it is probably a bad battery or weak batteries or the FICM has to be repaired, here is a link on how to test the FICM.http://www.bscustoms.net/diesel/FICM.pdf

deffinately not loosing coolant i scaned it there are no codes no check engine i am pretty sure it is engine oil getting in there somewhere has anyone else had the starter kicking in and out issue it actually seems like something is telling the starter to stop and then star again and when it happens the gauges go haywire thanks to everyone for all your advice this is an awsome site.:-):-):-)

one thing i forgot to mention when i was first trying to get this truck running before i noticed the cracked oil filter housing i screwed up spaying stabil fogging oil in the intake forgot there was a heater in there and got a big backfire but after i fixed the oil filter housing it ran fine for over a hundred miles with no issues it was like new and then it started smoking and lots of black soot i also havent confirmed if its actually hydrolocking seems like it because during crank it seems to have a kickback at the same spot during crank so i am assuming its a hydro issue so far i elliminated the rear two cylinders i pulled the glow plugs in them and didnt make any difference now i am going to pull the rest and try and confirm if it is a hydrolock or not thanks for all the advice you guys are awsome

You were spraying into the intake and had a big backfire... that doesn't sound good. Bob might have some more insight for you on this one.
I'm trying to wrap my head around this.
A cylinder contribution test would help tremendously in diagnosing here.
I know some trucks (duramax in particular) will shut the starter off by itself after cranking for so long, to prevent the owner from overheating it. Not sure if these trucks do that or not though... I'd imagine there is something built in to prevent that.
I wonder if you have a cracked injector nozzle or something? Causing fuel to leak in, and hydrolock. You may want to pull some oil and send it in for analysis to see if you have a bunch of fuel in oil.

That carbon buildup is why everyone deletes the egr cooler, it is a terrible desighn and needs to be eliminated. a fouled egr valve will cause black smoke and lack of power. you had a big backfire because the fluid you were using was ignited by the glowplugs, did you check all your boots to make sure none got damaged by the backfire?

ok i did the egr delete and i am still hydrolcking after cranking for a few min so i pulled the glow plugs and the two inside cylinders on the passenger side were full with engine oil i pulled the injectors and the outer o rings look fine does anyone know what other o rings in the injectors could cause this any help is appreciated thanks.

Since its oil and the o-rings look good and not worn is got to be head gaskets. But as a quick test replace the all the o-rings to those injectors, many places sell the o-ring kits that come with the 3 o-rings and copper gasket, Ford ones are pretty cheap and normally in stock at a dealership. Then retest, I haent seen a headgasket leak enough oil to cause hydro-lock but its possible. Maybe while you have the injectors out look for cracks in the injector wells, not common but again possible. And the 6.0 does not have a starter shut off, but if the batteries are low it will cause the eratic gauges and starter stopping, so will hydro-locking. If the batteries are 3 yrs old Id replace them, too many bad things happen with 6.0s with low batteries.
