Default well egr cooler bit the dust...

so i think. i have been getting egr codes for some time now and a few days ago i noticed my coolant was a little low so i topped it off with some distilled water and the day later it was back to the level it was at when low. thought no big deal im not dumping white smoke the intake manifold is coverd in soot where the egr sits nothing looked wet... but then today on an 1hr drive i get a p0401 code and i look at my coolant and its almost in red so i pulled over let it cool for an hour and added some more distilled water. im pretty sure its the egr cooler but not positive i mean what are the chances i have a leak in my cooling system ie hoses and such and a faulty sensor all at once..? slim to none so im like 99.9% sure its the egr cooler so in about an hour when my wife gets home with my card im gonna order the egr delete and oil cooler from mkm ugh i am not looking forward to doing this job

There are kits just like the MKM on ebay for about 1/2 the price, just FYI.

I'd make SURE it's the EGR cooler first though. Could be headgakset too bud. Is it pushing coolant out of the overflow bottle, or is it just "disappearing"?

Really there are cheaper ones?!?!? Damn I ended up going with the bulletproof egr cooler and oil cooler which cost $965.25 after tax and core. Idk about a hg though I still got plenty of power no oil in coolant no coolant in oil and the cap is still snug nor has the tank expanded. On top of that im getting egr codes. It should be here with in the week and i get paid wed so being as the turbo is gonna be out I'm gonna finally get around to reconditioning it and figured this would be a good time to add a batmo wheel and a new thermostat since I'm gonna FINALLY flush my coolant hahaha ya i still havent done it haha

Yeah I paid $180 shipped for my River City diesel one, looks exactly the same minus the blue bling.

The bulletproof stuff is real nice, so it's not like you missed out. What oil cooler comes in that kit? It's certainly not BPD's remote mount for that price... Must just be a new stocker? An OEM rebuild kit for the oil cooler is ~$235.

When my headgaskest have blown, I've never got any mixture of oil in coolant or coolant in oil. Ever. Always had the same amount of power too, hard to tell on boosted motors. You wont see the tank expanding either. What you will see is white residue around the coolant cap, and often times you'll hear a "tea kettle" whistle when you get on it. That's the pressure bleeding out of the cap.

I wouldn't bother with the batmowheel for the stock charger, or at least hold off for a while. There are some other things right around the corner for the 6.0's that are not much more money that should prove much better than a stock charger with a batmowheel.

Good time for a coolant flush for sure! Let us know how you make out and take pics!

Did you get get a new EGR cooler or did you get a delete kit?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

just asking because on the 03 and early 04 trucks you don't have to replace the uppipe, you can just block it off as they don't have the restrictive scoop inside of them.

@mdub: what is it you speak of as far as better than the batmo/stocker i wanna be filled in haha. and as far as any white residue on the degas bottle i didnt see any. i would of rather a delete but living in ca i really dont wanna have to do this job over to install another egr cooler to pass smog. frankly i dont ever wanna have to do any job where the intake has to come out ever again haha which is why i also went ahead and bought the oil cooler as well because the hpop was a nightmare i want this to be the last time i have to do this type of work. my luck though with 100k right around the corner im sure my injectors are next to go out.

@bob: i was gonna do the delete but i went with the bulletproof cooler cause after thinking about it i dont ever wanna do this job again
