newb question
im sure this question has been asked a million times on here but i wasent able to find it, so i appolijise in advance. also i saw the sticky about fuel filters above but all i really read on there was about the filters from international instead of ford.
im a newb to diesels and i wanted to change the fuel filters on my bone stock 05 6.0L. i had a 88 f250 7.3 idi and i learned that any time you did any work on the fuel system you had to bleed it... thats what im worried about on my new truck... when i change the fuel filters do i need to worry about bleeding the fuel system? or will the engine do that on its own? if someone could give me the procidure, or a link to the procidure on doing the fuel filters on the 6.0's that would be very helpful. thanks

you do not need to bleed the air out, just cycle the key a couple times and the fuel pump primes itself and bleeds the air through the return line. remove the top filter first using a 1/2 drive ratchet, just make sure you put new filter in the right side up. Easy part is done, now for the fun, there is a fuel filter mounted inside the framerail right next to the trans on drivers side. A 35mm or 1 3/8 wrench or short socket makes it alot easier. first take a 6mm allen wrench and take the water drain plug out of the side of the fuel module, after fuel is drained out of there then use 35mm to take the filter cap off, looks just like the oil filter cap, the filter snaps into cap so you will have to pull it out of cap, make sure you snap the new one into the cap before you reinstall it. The fuel filter kits come with new orings for the caps, use them and lube them up a little with oil or fuel to keep them from binding. should take you about half hour the first time and after that you can do it in 15min. Use motorcraft filter, pull them out of box at parts store and make sure they mave a fine membrane around the big filter, if you can see the ripples of filter with nothing around it don't accept the filter. That membrane helps keep water out, also Ford has an all new filter desighn that really keeps the water and debri out but they are more exspensive right now, probably only available through them right now..
