new (to me) truck prevenative maintance
first id like to say im a newbie to 6.0 diesels and new to DB site. so far im liking what i see everyone seems knowlageable and pretty nice to the newbies.
I just bought a 2005 f250 supercab longbed with a 6.0 in it. truck has 187k on it and i got it for a steal. its a flordia truck and i live in Chicago so its extremly clean by IL standards.
Basically what im asking is what should i do right off the bat to do some prevenative maintance so im not having to dump a grand into it in the next month on something going wrong. ive read that turbos go out because of carbon build up... is this true? should i take out and clean my turbo? and how do i do this? odviousily oil change, and should i change my fuel filter? fuel system cleaner? honestily in not sure what i sould be doing so any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I'd change your oil filter, fuel filter, check your air filter if it's dirty replace it or do a 6637 mod, maybe replace coolant if it's dirty looking. Do You have any history o the truck? Have head gaskets or head studs been done? Egr delete? Coolant filter mods? I'd say with 187 miles o the clock those things have either been tended to or not caused an issue I not a 6.0 guy buy know a little about them mdub will help you out on this for sure.

the truck is totally stock and im not sure how to find out what has been done as far as gasgets or studs. egr is still there i was thinking of doing a delete but dont want to fix something thats not broken how can i keep an eye on that to know if or when it goes out?
how can i find out if it has a coolant filter mod?
and what is a 6637 mod?
sorry im new to 6.0's and relativly new to diesels all together.
thanks for the help i appreciate it

The 6637 mod is just a cheap do it yourself intake, it's a napa filter #6637, and you just make a homemade intake out of it with exhaust pipe or whatever to have lying around. Zombie intake makes the same thing with mandrel bent pipe and all and painted. Like I said I'm no 6.0 connoseur, so I don't want to tell you false facts, but if you say it's stock then I'd say gaskets or head studs haven't been replaced. Only way of telling would pulling heads off I'd say. But if there not done I'd personally do them with the miles it has. What are your future plans for the truck? DD, tow pig, show queen, strip??? That will help alot in pointing you in the right direction of things you should consider replacing before doing any heavy mods.

First thing i would do is an oil change. Make sure you use motorcraft or acceptable substitute from international. Same thing with both fuel filters. one on top of the motor next to oil filter and one on frame below drivers door. Coolant filter should be obviously mounted on the passenger side of the radiator if it has one. Do yourself a favor and go directly to the Ford dealership and ask for an Oasis report. This should tell you everything that has been done to the truck under warranty or at the dealer. If it still has the egr system i would pull the egr valve to check/clean it. Check for fluid below the egr and that would tell you whether or not the egr cooler is still good. If she is running good most of these issues may have been addressed. That or you got a tank. there are some of these trucks that were built and just last. what are your intentions with the truck? is it a tow pig or a track star or somewhere in between. mine has and always will be a toy. i would also say put some rev-x in with the oil change even if you have no stiction issue. The product is just that good.

i will defanitly stop by a ford dealer and get that oasis report on monday. and good idea i will also pull out the egr and clean that also if anyone can throw up a link to a thread where it explains the CORRECT way to clean an egr that would be great. my intensions with the truck are a dailey driver with occasional off roading (lift will be soon).
i know there are a MILLION different fuel additives for diesels is there a spacific one i should use, or stay away from them all together?
again thanks for the help and any other info or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

When you pull the egr, just get a piece of baling wire or a coat hanger and knock off the bigger pieces of soot, then use a tooth brush for the rest. If you want to replace the o rings they are a 20 or 21mm o ring.
Just take your time and just be in ah when you see the egr and realize why 6.0 blow up
