what should i use to clean it like carb cleaner?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also i was thinking of putting an intake on and possibly a very mild tune in the future. if i dont go crazy and keep it all stock besides intake exhaust and a mild tune would i be okay without doing studs? im a gearhead but im no diesel mechanic so studs are kind of a big deal for me to do. and theres no way i could afford to have it done.

With an intake you'd be fine, a mildy tuned chip I'm not sure on I'd say you'd be ok if you were easy on it but when I had my 7.3 i got a Ts 6 position for it and man was it hard to keep my foot out of it.

delete the egr! thats your best bet. And as far as tunes there are people on here running hot tunes with stock head bolts and nothing is wrong but some trucks can handle it and some cant. The stud job isnt too bad to do yourself. could be done in a week.

If I bought a 6.0 for a steal with almost 200k on it...

Oil change (use only motorcraft or fram oil filters for the 6.0, as they're the same filter)
fuel filters (use only motorcraft or international)
coolant flush
oil cooler rebuild kit
coolant filter
clean turbo
turbo back exhaust
new air filter or a good CAI

Run the tires off of it.

If you want to add power down the road, factor in machine shop time on the heads and headstuds.

I havnt done headstuds in my truck yet, and you can see the mods in my sig. shes gone for about a year like this and hasnt blown, but the headgaskets are starting to go. Basically, over time youll prolly wanna get them done, so id start saving up slowly. You dont need to mod your truck to the moon over night but it is pretty cool to build your truck up. Goodluck!

1. Can you even do a 6637 on a 6.0? It is pretty tight in there...
2. Why would you want to...the stock filter on the 6.0 is really good! Same media as the AIS, Donaldson power core...not cheap but really can't get any better.

Personally, I like to change every fluid (coolant, engine oil, ATF, x-case, power steering, front and rear diffs, brake etc) and every filter on the truck when I get it just cause I can't vouch how old they are.

Yeah don't bother with the 6637 or whatever, that's a 7.3 thing. Stock 6.0 air filter is actually extremely good.

Stay with the stock FORD air filter, period. There is not a cai setup that will filter better while flowing up to about 500 hp.

Dyno tests can be miss leading. F.Y.I. Say stock inlet pipe is 4" and is replaced w/ a 5" pipe. Air flow through is slower due to the larger pipe diameter. The mass air flow sensor is calibrated for the 4" pipe and sees a lower air flow than there really is. So adjustments are made to the turbo duty cycle to adjust for the 'low air flow'. An increase in the turbo output will add more manifold pressure, and more HP. So what one is really doing is putting in dirtier air, and more fuel. Gain is from an out of calibration condition, not from filter efficiency...

I did not think this up, it is kinda paraphrased from forum 247977 at the powerstroke forum online somewhere on the net...

I've also heard the magical myth of the stock filter flowing up to 500 rwhp, and have regurgitated it myself, however I question that now. I've seen NO dyno comparisons to prove this. I will say the stock filter is a GREAT filter setup, and for the guy running an exhaust and tuner, it's fine. Any more than that and I'd be upgrading. I upgraded anyways just because it's a PITA to change the stock filter in and out.

Welcome to Diesel Bombers. Almost everything you could want to know has been beat into the ground on one thread or another here. If you can't find it, ask. The search is pretty good.

On to the OP's question. I agree with just about everything else and would like to add this: I dumped the front off my air box and added an AiRaid filter to that box in 06, works great from my end. I didn't do it for performance, my MAF isn't clogged or gooed up, and my turbo is flying apart, I just can't see throwing away a $75 filter every 15K miles.

I wouldn't sweat studs until it pushed a head gasket. This coming from a 95K motor with about 55K tuned miles on it, and currently running Matt's SRL as a daily tune.

Invest in some form of gauges, I have a ScanGauge II, and Auto Meter EGT/fuel psi in mine. This will be very helpful in determining the conditoin of your 6.0.
