I have a similar problem... When it gets into 4 low it takes forever to get out i have to park go in and out of N turn the truck off and back on lock and unlock the hubs go in reverse then N then drive then back to N... After all that it finally gets out of 4low. I read somewhere something about vaccume lines but i very rarely use 4x4 so it hasnt been a real issue so far. When u figure it out though let me know

Are you using the manual hubs? Or are you just using the switch on the dash? Sometimes the vacuum hubs stick and you have to dissengage and then roll back in reverse to unlock the hubs, but thats normally only when you use the manual hubs. If the light on the dash stays on after you switch back to 2 wheel then you have a transfer case shift motor issue, it might be either not getting the right signal from the module or just failing to dissengage on its own.

On my Dodge, I have to roll forward slowly while pulling back on the lever til it pops into 4lo. Not familiar with Fords, might not work at all for you.

Oh, right, just reread the thread, you guys appear to have rotary switches on the dash, I've seen some Fords with floor t/c levers, that's the mindset I was in.

Either way, if you're trying to use "auto" it needs to roll forward some in order to engage for either the Ford or the Chevy's. Unless you've already got the hubs locked by turning them manually.
I know mine sticks sometimes and can be a little difficult to get out of 4 low, but I hardly ever use it and figured that was most of the issue.
