High pressure oil leak?
#21
I get around 15-16 daily running around. I have managed better than 21 on the highway, however this was driving from where I live in NY to Woodsville NH. On "my" truck I have to keep it at 65mph, if I run faster my mpg does drop. This is far from a straight flat trip, there are some hills along the way. I would love to make the I-80 run from Omaha to Cheyenne just to see what I could get. I am sure that with the older truck-older strategy, race tuning-locked converter and the right driving style I could get 24mpg.....But would I be having fun?

Insert face into palm...
My apologies here, I'm confusing members again (long day Friday eh?)
This post:
I was thinking papachuck, not Bob, thus my comment about the race tune use.
I'm actually going to agree with this, never seen one get 24mpg EVER. I know Eric from Innovative was able to get a 2x4 truck into the 22-24mpg range, this truck also had larger injectors, a larger turbo, and this mileage was recorded running 50-55mph on flat ground between two shops. He said if you got into it at all, it dropped dramatically. I can't see a stock injectored truck doing this. Especially on an Edge, but I've been wrong before.
This is the guy who I was thinking, when I was posting about Bob (not that I don't believe you Bob, but it's one of those things it's hard to believe without seeing).
I hear that. I found one place near my hometown where I could do a 100mph for a short time. I wanted to see what RPM's and EGT's were at 100 steady.
If you're getting 24mpg out of any 6.0, hold on to it with dear life and don't let a dealer reflash that thing for anything.

Bob wouldn't BS us. He's one of very few I'd trust. He is also running an 03 with (I'm assuming) older programming, which helps and he daily drives on a race tune, so the converter is locked up all the time, which is a lot more efficient as well.
Plus he drives like an old man!

I think that with the tanks on our trucks being such a pain to get full, alot of people have a hard time figuring their mpg. I was with a guy who filled his tank, said it wouldnt hold more and it was up in the neck. I shook his truck and fiddled with it and got 3 more gallons in. Over a 100 mile run 3 gallons would make a huge difference and it could be either way depending on which end of the trip you put the biggest effort in filling the tank. I honestly believe 20-21mpg is possible for most trucks depending on how hard you try, tuning and terrain ect. 13-15 is probably more reasonable for most people. Would I call BS on the 24mpg claim? no I wouldnt, but I would say repeat it a few times and be very sure the tank is full every time. Just to be sure of the results.

I have used my totally stock (Except for K&N air system) 06 6.0 for both commercial hauling and as a DD and I watch my mpgs very closely, especially when I was figuring the cost/mile to run the truck for business.
I do fill to the very top of the neck, shake the truck and fill until most of the time the cap pushes a little fuel out. The best I can get is 17.5 mpg if I run right at 2000 RPM (OEM Tach). The ONLY time I ever did any better was in Maine one day when I was driving a two lane and had time to kill and I hit almost 20 mpg but that was the ONLY time. The worst the truck ever did was going from Phoenix to Salt Lake grossing 26,000+ pulling a 28' goose neck in FWD during a snow storm and that was just over 9 mpg
Papachuck you don't want to make the I-80 run from Omaha to Cheyenne you will be fighting a head wind you want to go from Cheyenne to Omaha and catch the tail wind

Just get west of the Mississippi - I90 in SD & I70 from St Louis will both have less traffic then I80 which is a MAJOR 18 wheeler route. Came across I90 in SD one morning and went 130 miles before I even saw another vehicle. Just bring a piece of rope, set the cruise to the speed you want then use the rope to tie the steering wheel then take a nap or read a good book
