Ok I cleaned my turbo yesterday, not to bad of a job. It really wasn't that dirty... And come to find out it had a Garrett turbo with 9 veins.

So my question is why doesn't it scream like it should? I know it's just like the stock turbo, but I hear that the boost is lower at lower rpms... I kniw its not a bottom end turbo, I have the stock down pipe no kitty no muffler I'm pretty sure 4" after down pipe to 6" stack and it's quite!!! My buddy has an 06 with the Garrett power max and that thing screams!!!

When I forget the plug the sensor in on the intake( maf?) it will scream like a jet!

The unison ring was not to dirty no heavy soot, but the other parts had a little rust/ pitting.

After cleaning my boost numbers stayed around the same with a little difference.

Tried to power brake it again last night and nothing I hit 10psi boost and held it for 10 seconds or more, but wow did the truck take off!!! My boost doesnt start climbing until 2,000 rpm

The truck came with a Garrett, the Powermax is an improved version. the whistle comes from the impeller wheel on the exhaust side. I have noticed that it is less noticable with stacks compared to side exit pipes, stacks pointed up away from your ear instead of pointing at your ear maybe. The Powermax is supposed to have a good whistle, as good or better than my 03.

So how many veins does the stock have? Mine has 9, I thought stock 03 was 10 veins?

How can I find out if it's a power max? Any numbers?

Also I'm going to put a new down pipe on, so what should I run 3.5" or 4"? Aluminum?

If you are talking about the movable vanes, I think all of them have 9. on the exhaust side the wheel has blades, some had 10 some had 13 and then 15 I think. also I know that if your truck had a turbo replaced under warrenty, it may have had a newer style pedestal and turbo put on. Downpipe-3.5. 4in is a pain to get in and not hum against the firewall, not enough benifit for the trouble. Are you still using the Edge programmer?

No I am only using the edge as a gauge moniter saving up for a sct... Ok I wasn't sure what they meant by the numbers on the turbo, I thought it was the amount of veins in it... I'm guessing it has a different pedestal bc all three bolts were parallel with the ground, I thought the old ones had only 2 parallel and one horizontal?

It's the vanes on the exhaust side you're after. 04-07 trucks aren't going to whistle, it's just that 03 turbo with 10 vanes. I believe 04 year trucks had 12 vanes, and 05+ had 15 vanes.
