A new SCT X-3 #3000 will only hold custom tunes, so you will also need to order tunes for it.

The SCT SF3 #3015 will hold 5 canned tunes and 3 custom tunes, so if you choose to buy one, you won't need to buy custom tune for it.

IMO, your better off with the X3, custom tunes are way better than the canned tunes. Whether the tunes are for towing or performance, custom tunes will be much better.

Only Authorized SCT tune writers can write tunes.

How it works is, you buy the SCT. It shows up at your door, then you plug it into the OBDII port, scroll down to "vehicle info" to write down the strategy hex code. Contact a SCT tune writer with the strategy hex code info, the SCT device serial number, and mods to your truck. Let them know what tunes you want to buy. They will email you the tunes.

You will need a Window based PC, either use the SCT CD software or go to the SCT website and download the software needed to transfer the emailed tunes from your PC to the SCT device.

After you have the tunes loaded to the SCT, your ready to tune your truck.

So when I purchase the SCT sf3 3015 tuner it comes with preloaded tunes and then holds three more custome tunes that I have to pay extra for or are they what I'm paying for as well

The SF3 has pre-loaded tunes, these are what we call "canned tunes". The canned tunes are generic off the shelf tunes that were written for SCT and will work on any 6.0. The canned tunes are "OK", but lack in power and transmission control ability when compared to a custom tune.

So the SF3 will show up at your door with just the canned tunes already pre-loaded. The canned tunes consist of "trans only" tune, 2 "tow" tunes, a "street" tune, and a "performance" tune. These tunes are "OK" per say, but once you try a custom tune, you'll almost never use a canned tune again.

Correct. Depends where you buy it. Most of the big name 6.0 tuners will give you custom tunes for free if you buy the tuner from them. Depends on what tunes you get tune. For example if you buy it from Innovative Diesel, they offer 3 free custom tunes, but an extreme tune is an $80 upgrade. Well worth the upgrade.

There really is no reason to get the SF3 over the X3 unless you get the deal of the century, you will have NO reason to run those canned tunes.

Either one (X3 or SF3) will be good for custom tunes. It just cheaper in the long run to go with the X3.

I have never seen the SF3 sold in a package deal with custom tunes included in the price (SF3 $379), then add in 3 custom tunes ($100-$165), that's $479 minimum.

Where as if you go with a X3 from a tune writer, you can get a X3 with 3 custom tunes included in the price for $425-$429.

Here is some link to SCT custom tune writers that include custom tunes in the price of the X3.
