checked for codes agin and got
p0500, p0670, p0693, and the other 2 as well,
p0674 and, p2291. icp to low and glow plug 4. i have noticed that at times when starting in the mornings i have to try 2 or 3 times to get it started, and idles kinda rough. i also noticed this afternoon when i started it for the first time in a couple days a whitish color smoke. i need to get this pos truck fixed so i don't have to call it that. it is a good truck as long its running and don't have to start it.

P0500 is the wheel speed sensor on the top of the rear diff. Pull it out and clean it. If it doesn't go away, just replace it.
P0670 is the GPCM code (glow plug control module) I would check the wiring around this and make sure everything is plugged in accordingly. Glow plugs and GPCM can be checked with a resistance reading from a multi-meter. Check glow plugs to ground, they should be between .1 and 2 ohms. The harness to GPCM should be 0 to 1 ohms.
P0693 Fan 2 control circuit low... never even really seen this, could be a bad fan clutch, or just a simple sensor.

Your poor starting is most likely a glow plug issue at this point. I say get those fixed first, then re-test truck's starting and driving and see what else will go away. Try cleaning the speed sensor too, that should go away. I believe they're magnetic so they pick up debris and just get dirty.

Mdub707, I figured I would add my question here vice starting a new threat. Just put the new exhaust on this weekend. Sounds great. I was having a little rough idling even after it was warm. I was getting ready to load the tunes from Eric on my SCT Livewire and thought to check for codes. I received the following last night:

P0267, P0269, P0273, P0279, P0470, P0472, P0603, P0611, P0675.

I cleared the codes and drove into work this morning and check the codes again and received the following:
P0267, P0273, P0279, P0611, P0675.

I looked them up and know that is the low for #3, #5, #7. Replace FICM and #5 Glow Plug.

Would I be getting the low #3,#5 and #7 due to the FICM?

I haven't loaded the tunes yet. No Smoke! I did notice a little oil in the new Exhaust. Rough idling comes and goes!

What should I do next?

Truck still stock, 175,000. All I have had to replace so far has been the starter.

tks Joe

More than likely it's the FICM for sure. When you turn the key and hear the injectors buzz does it sound nice and uniform or kind of all over the place? Wait til the motor is cold, then test the FICM. You can find the test procedure at the top of the 6.0 page, it's a "sticky." You'll need an 8mm socket, a 10mm socket, a multi-meter, a T20 bit for your ratchet, about 15 minutes and a couple beers. Not bad at all.

Sorry to sound like a "Newbie," but I haven't listened for a buzz inside the truck. I will try and get my brother-in-law to turn on the key and listen under the hood. How much should an FICM cost? Don't I have to get ford to reload it? Main question, can I do this or do I have to get Ford to do it?
On the key, just turn on and not start and I should hear a buzz? I already read your test procedures on testing the FICM. I cleared the codes this morning and will check them again when I get home tonight.

The buzzing noise under the hood is the injectors being "spun up" by the FICM. It basically just spins them over a few times to free them up a bit to fire the motor. It only does it for maybe 10 seconds or so. Sometimes not even that long. The FICM is what is driving them, so if that is weak, chances are your batteries and/or your FICM are on their way out.

You can buy a new FICM from Ford at the tune of $900, + programming, or you can most likely just take the one you have off and have it repaired for a fraction of the cost. A new one will eventually fail too, they never really fixed the problems.

Joe, you might not have the buzzing unless you had it reprogrammed at the dealer. I have an early 04 and I didn't get it reprogrammed since 04 and they didn't add that feature till after my one reprogramming but the later programs killed mileage so I never did it. If you have a buddy with a 05 or later see what theres sounds like with the buzzing so you know what to listen for. the only noise mine makes is from the fuel pump and the brake booster,

Thanks for the great info. I will not be able to check the FICM out until this weekend. The truck is starting fine. Every once in awhile it wants to jump while driving or the rpms will go up for a second while setting at a stop light. It seems to stop when I speed up. Mostly happens while going a steady speed or like I said a stop light. Then it sounds like my old chevy big block with a cam. Only time I get any kind of smoke is if I really get in it. I had the maintanance plan through 100,000. It has 175,000 now and my coolant level has remained the same at the minimum level line. After putting on the new exhaust, the only new thing I hear is the turbo spinning down after I turn the key off. I'm and have been getting about 17 mpg mix city and hwy.
Where or who rebuild FICMs? About how long does it take? This my daily driver.

Thanks again, Joe

Early model FICM's buzzed after the key was shut off, newer ones buzz when you first turn the key on. Either way you'd still hear some buzzing.

You have a few options for getting FICM's done. FICMrepair.com is a sponsor here now. Swamps diesel also does it, (more money).
