New guy needs help!
hey all..new to diesel bomber.!!.had a few questions and seemed like a good place to get some answers... So my story is.... i recently bought a 2005 6.0 powerstroke wit 100k on it. I was a duramax guy for a while, but at my company we only run fords so i was familiar with them liked them eqully and decided to grab one. I bought the truck in Oct. of 2011 for $18k and mods it had were....a 6" Superlift sptrings front blocks rear, a straight 4" exhaust from headers back wit 7" tip, a K&n full intake setup, a capped of EGR with the stock egr still wired in and was just sitting there so no engine light, and was running 36X13.50 20LT Irok super swampers with 20" American Eagle Wheels. When I initially test drove the truck i could tell it had a major misfire and the brakes were junk. The dealer agreed to fix and said he replaced the #2 and #8 injector and said he wouldnt do the brakes.. NBD i thought and just beat him up a little more on the sale price. So i got the truck home and brought it imeadiatly to my friend who is a very good mechanic and told him to go threw the truck top to bottom and let me know what he found n wat needed to be done. He called me a few days later with this report of what was needed and wrong...!! New brakes all around which i knew. Pad rotors and rear calipers. New shocks all around. the rear 6" lift had 2 3" blocks stacked ontop of eachother and were welded which i saw wen purchasing and thought was retarded so i needed new rear lift blocks. The 2 injectors were still misfiring, there was oil in the coolant, 4x4 wouldnt engage and needed a new plug to engage, and the rear end spyder gear was shot!!completely gone.... so i told him to go ahead and do everything and he did. all brakes upgraded, new Bilstien 5100 shocks, 2 new custom made 6" rear blocks, new rebuilt rear end with locker, 2 new injectors, and new oil cooler kit. he flushed coolant a few X's changed all fluids in transfer cases, oil, brake, ect. then i Put in a super chip programmer, powdercoated the wheels black, powerdercoated front and rear bumper, and also painted the lower trim which was gray all black and did undercarage. So with about $7k in work and parts listed i stand on a total of about $26k with the truck now.. about what i figured it needed when i bought it. so ive been driven it now for about 4 months and all was going pretty good, except for gas milage of about 15mpg when i had a new problem arise. I was driven highway at medium pace about 70mph when i could smell coolant....! i got to where i was going and got out and looked and saw coolant dripping down my front driver side wheel well. i popped the hood and noticed it all had blown out the dgas cap.! so i drank beer all day and tried to ignore it, but happed on the way home that night. At this point i figured its the headgasket, and so does my mechanic. Im gona go ahead and do the HG replacement with the ARP studs and black gaskets, also a new EGR cooler i think and rebuild my oilcooler, im gona throw in a coolant filtration system also. and do my belt and fuel filters wen cab and everything is disasembled. Does anyone have any ideas of anything else i should do while im this far into the project to avoid any other complications, or is that about it for bulletproofing the 6.0??? i like the truck, just so far its been afuckin $ pit to date. i hope after doing this just about everything on the truck will be new and improved and i wont have any more major problems.... i will also get pics up when i get a chance after the HG replacement.. so let me know peoples.!!! O n have a lawsuit against the dealer for not properly fixing the things they agreed upon and also by breaking there 30 warrenty by refusing to fix the things i mentioned when i brought the vehicle back to them after my mechanic gave me the to do list. My lawyer said we have a Win and are going for triple damages and has the district attorney on it to! so hopefully all the $ i put into the truck i will be getting back and then some..sleezy car sales men!

First thing, get rid of that superchips junk. Get an SCT with custom tunes. Do 5 minutes of research on this site and you'll see why and who to get it through!
As for your rebuild, you'll want:
OEM headgaskets (need to figure out if you have the 18mm or 20mm dowel heads)
Just the headgaskets 18mm x2 4C3Z-6051-EB (You should have 18mm if they're original heads)
Exhaust manifold gaskets x2 6C3Z-9448-A
Kit for the updated dummy plugs/stand pipes 6E7Z-9A332-B
Updated STC fitting 4C3Z-9B246-F
oil cooler rebuild kit 3C3Z-6A642-CA
Updated HPOP screen (comes in oil cooler rebuild kit)
Updated IPR screen/o-ring kit (This comes in one of these other kits too I believe) but just in case the P/N for that is 3C3Z-9H529-A
Other things you could get but aren't really necessary:
Upgraded turbo oil supply line 3C3Z-9T516-A
Upgraded turbo oil drain line 6C3Z-9T515-A
You should also invest in bunch of distilled water for the coolant flush again, a bottle of restore (1 gal) to rinse the silicates out, a coolant filter from either Sinister diesel or Dieselsite (google the names), and a good coolant of your choice. You should also be looking at gauges if you're running a programmer. I'd highly recommend fuel pressure, EOT and ECT (engine oil temp, engine coolant temp). You can monitor ECT and EOT to see when the oil cooler is plugging to prevent headgasket failure. A full EGR delete might be a good idea too, especially because you don't know what's actually blocked or not on your cooler.
Also the exhaust system... we don't do header back bud. Our "headers" which are actually manifolds on these feed into up-pipes which drive the turbo, exhaust is then routed through the turbo and into the down-pipe, so when we do a full exhaust system, it's turbo-back.
Your best bet right now is to just take this info in, sit back, grab a few beers, and just read as much as you can on here.
Welcome to DB!

I am a newbie and total novice when it comes to diesels but if you take Mdub advise you will be amazed at the knowledge you can obtain from this site!!
Next take the time to fill in your signature line with as much info on your truck as possible. There are so many guys on here that it helps whom ever is going to answer your questions to get an idea of what you are running. The members have been more then willing to anwer my questions so I have learned and still am learning - this site is a hell of a resource!!

this site is a great resource. i just joined after buying my first diesel. i have learned alot already there are a great bunch of guys that are willing to help. i had the coolant issue you that you talked about. i thought it was a head gasket it turned out to be the 11 dollar cap for the degas bottle. its worth a shot. 11 bucks vs. 4k you never know. i suggest trying that first before you spend all that money. welcome to the site.

Actually sinisterdiesel.com (mkmcustoms.com) came up with a pretty sick set of headers and uppipe with a bung welded in for an EGT probe already. The headers are $1500 bucks and not sure on the up pipe but I'm sure it's pretty sick read a few good things about it but not much cuz not many people are gonna spend that much on em. I will eventually but since you have a law suite and gonna go for triple costs **** it and buy em along with a powermax turbo and some 155 injectors haha ! Good luck dude get that thing studded ASAP btw I have the SCT livewire TS tuner with custom tunes from innovative and the thing is amazing!!!! Highly recommended !
