Definitely studs and delete, especially since you have a tuner. The way I see it, it doesn't matter how good your truck looks if it is just going to sit in the driveway broken. Honestly, though studs, delete, coolant filter and I would look into a SCT tuner with custom tunes. With that tuner, chances are you'll get more power and it won't be as hard on your tranny as that BD is. Welcome to the site , hope I was helpful.

Yup, agreed. You can probably just sell all that bullydog stuff to pay for an SCT too.

Black smoke is basically just a sign of poor tuning on a daily driver truck. Sure most of them will puff a little before the turbo lights, but most of the good tuners for the SCT will only have a slight haze at WOT once the turbo is lit.

Black smoke is putting a "black eye" so to speak on the diesel community. The movement now is for clean power. Obviously we all love it, but please smoke responsibly.

That price doesn't sound that great, especially if he's only "checking" and not replacing parts. I would agree to NEW parts. Heads need to be checked for flatness, magnafluxed for cracks, a valve job would be a good idea, and pressure checking. This ran ~$500 for my heads. This is the most essential step to the process. Use OEM headgaskets only.

You can probably get one of the SCT's from a vendor on here, and some of them more than likely offer the custom tunes you'd want.

Look for tunes from:

Eric @ Innovative Diesel
Matt @ Gearhead
Doug @ GoGo (Direct injection performance).

Those are my 3 favorites.
