A few weeks ago we had a long discussion on coolant look for a thread by mdub "coolant discussion"

No you don't need to take the starter off. There are two drain plugs on the block. Removing one will suffice.

In a thread by me "what coolant to use" at the end is a link to the most discriptive write up ive ever seen on how to properly flush it

Me personally I'm a huge advocator of delo elc concentrate rotella elc concentrate, fleetguard elc concentrate, and catipillar elc concentrate. I have no faith in Ford gold or zurex being as the proof I've seen of them clogging the oil cooler and the egr cooler due to the silicate goo they leave.

Things you will need:
4 gallons of elc concentrate (your choice brand)
28-35 gallons of distilled water (for flushing)
4 galons of distilled water (to mix with elc concentrate)
Fleetguard restore
Flrreguard restore plus or 2qt of Ford vc-9
Thermostat (optional)

i am flushing my 2005 today

the coolant was green

pulled the bottom hose and drained

put hose back on and put the Ford vc9 in (two bottles) topped up with distil water

run truck for one hour

removed bottom hose

filled up with distil water

run for 20 min

Dump again

put hose on and put in the Cat ELC red coolant in

The Cat coolant sells for 15.89 jug
The Kenworth coolant 10.86 jug

The Cat dealer told me the fluid is made by same manufacture ( different label)

go accross the street and get it there...he even phoned over at the desk to get me the discount

Nice

cat-1 ELC and if you want to drain everthing out yes you will need to remove the starter. i just flush 2-3 times after i flush everthing with distiled water and pull the driverside plug out. and then fill with 100% antifeese to get my 5050 i think the passanger side of the block holds about 1 1/2 gal.
