New to me 2006 6.0L. Help wanted.
I bought an Amarillo yesterday. A little about the truck, 6.0L turbo diesel, 2006, 4wd, 4:10 gears, single exhaust. What type/brand of programmer/chip do I get to increase the mileage? Will this also increase the horsepower? I would also like to do intake, exhaust or whatever else will help, but thought the electronics would be the most bang for my buck initially. I have read that there is an aftermarket water pump for this engine and think I am going to have that installed soon too. Any help/suggestions/answers is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Exhaust will help out the most if planning upgrades, a good turbo back ex. will let you get the most out of your other mods, stock ex. is too restrictive. with my setup I get 20mpg with a best of 24mpg on a long trip. you might want to look at getting a set of 3:73 gears if you want to make good mileage, with 4:10s I would think 16mpg would be about the best your gonna get. As for programmers we would need a little more info on what you are going to use the truck for.I personnaly like my Edge juice w att. had no problems in last 150k with it installed and I have 250k on the truck, alot of guys are going to say get a SCT but ask them what kinda mileage they are getting, not good from what I see.

SCT here. We addressed this in another thread. I dont know where you are getting the whole mileage thing Bob but with 3.73 gears im getting about 22 in the summer and about 19 in the winter. I saw a 3 mile per gallon increase with the SCT and a 4 inch exhaust. If you keep your foot out of it you should get great mileage. I will say this. the "other" programmers other than the SCT dont have the capability to tune your transmission to the new power levels. Lets steer the new guy in the right direction. SCT, coolant flush, make sure you change your oil with a CJ4 oil every 5k and fuel filters every 10k. Use only motorcraft or the comparable International part for your filters. Up to you whether or not you do a coolant filter. Im about to myself. these are key items to keep that thing reliable. Good luck with it and welcome to the masochistic brotherhood that is the 6.0 navistar.

You might want to get the new fuel presure spring/blue/ and fuel pres guage befor to many mods, its good to keep track of presures to avoid damage to the injectors.
Sorry Arsenal didn't meen to affend the SCT users, maybe I am thinkin of the "guy" that drives his truck like a Mustang, M&ub all the time and then has lousy mileage,LOL
At what power settings can you tow with using the SCT? can you use more power because it controls the trans or do you still have to limit it?

Highest average I've gotten was 22mpg on one trip since I've had the truck and that was a trip I did to Lake Tahoe right after I did all the work to my truck, fresh coolant, oil and oil/fuel filters, SCT on Economy and cruise control set at 65mph. Map Quest put it at 370 miles from my dad's driveway in Lancaster to the lake one way, put 34 gallons in when I was pulling back into town 750 miles later.

Highest I've seen with my truck was 22mpg average RIGHT after doing oil and oil/fuel filters going from my dad's in Lancaster to Lake Tahoe with the cruise control set at 65 and the SCT on Economy. Somethin' like 370 one way according to Map Quest, she took 34 gallons when I pulled back into town 750 miles later.
