New 6.0 driver with problems
Hey everyone...long time fan, brand new member. I know there are tons of information on here about problems with 6.0's, so I apologize as my questions may be repeats, but I also know everyone's situation is a little different. Here we go....
I am leaking oil. started noticing it on driveway about 1 week after I bought it. looked underneath truck...all around oil pan rim is oil, its dripping from pan where engine and trans connect, oil is around the plastic looking plug on back side of oil pan, looks like its coming from above all this as there is oil on top of oil pan and on some of engine parts. (hard to describe without pictures, maybe I can put some up) didn't know if it could be coming from HPOP as there is a little oil on top of engine around this area. worst fear of course is HG's. taking off in traffic is embarrassing, and at times scary. hardly any get up and go at all. doesn't seem to sputter or hesitate. It just almost feels as if I have a very heavy load on it. here is things/info that I know/have checked according to what I have been reading.
side note....I wiped oil clean from around where it was dripping, and a droplet returned withing 6 hrs or so. smelled it and coolant to compare, and did not smell similar. so with my extreme lack of expertise I ruled out that it was coolant mixed with black soot dripping.
Truck:
-2006 F-250 6.0...bought 12.28.11
-112,000 mi.
-Stock on everything as far as I can tell even exhaust and intake
-no kind of programmer or anything on it
-I do not know when last time oil, fuel, air filters have been changed
-1.5.12 EGR valve was removed and cleaned(cleaner than what I thought. Dealer may have cleaned it before put on lot) black soot in intake, but didn't appear wet.
-Not my daily driver. maybe 1or2 days during week if at all. Rock it on weekends though. No hard driving. May step on it on occasion, but was accused by wife as being a grandma.
-getting 13.8-14mpg, no white smoke, no white residue on degas bottle, no extremely funny smells that I can tell
-no whistle that I can hear from degas bottle
-looking up from underneath the truck, it almost looks like it is or was wet around the exhaust manifolds. not "black wet" like oil, but more similar looking to wet cardboard. exhaust manifolds are rusty and you just just see what looks like outline of very slight wetness on engine around them. not dripping (hope that makes sense)
-not sure yet on whether or not im losing coolant yet. just looked yesterday and it was at line. gonna drive it a couple days this week and see after weekend.
Things I have not yet done
-change fuel filters(doing 1.21.12)
-change oil/oil filter(doing 1.21.12)
-change air filter(doing near future unless you think should be first)
-yes...since I have yet to do these things, you CAN assume that I have not yet done anything any more technical. I have access to all tools and a lift, just haven't had time, as I haven't had the truck that long and work a lot. I used to work on F16 engines, so not scared to dive in, I just want to cover all angles and do everything correctly.
Thank you for reading this long redundant post, and thank you in advance for the help. I tried to provide as much info as possible, but if I left anything out, just say so, and Ill post.

Your leaking oil isn't from headgaskets.
It's tough to say where it's coming from, there are a few areas that could leak up there, turbo, HPOP cover, IPR valve etc...
FWIW, I haven't seen a 6.0 that is dry on the bellhousing yet.
Your MAX coolant level should be at the MIN coolant line, it was an updated TSB from Ford. Most have a "sticker" on the bottle now indicating this.
Do your maintenance. International or Motorcraft fuel filters only. Motorcraft or Fram oil filter (only time I'll EVER recommend a FRAM, because they're the same for this application), and a good oil of your choice. Don't forget to drain the water out of the fuel pump down on HFCM.

I had the same problem when my hpop went out as far as feeling I was pulling a heavy load is exactly how I described it. When ever I couldn't figure out what the exact problem was ive just dropped it off at the dealer and had them tell me what it was vs buying a ton of " it might be this" parts. Sounds like the ipr to me though. Are u throwing any codes

Well... no you didn't, you just decided to waste money, time, and parts for nothing. (not aiming at you brondondolon, just saying in general). I see dealerships do this on customers dime and nothing else drives me as crazy.

Thank you guys for all the INFO. Is the auto inginuity a handheld computer to check codes? May be worth investing in. No, I am not throwing codes, but I heard that you could have codes that may not throw the CEL. True?

This is true, they're called soft codes. AutoEnginuity is just a software program and a cable that connects OBD port to USB. You would need a labtop to install the software on and run it though. I use an ASUS netbook. I've picked up netbooks pretty darn cheap. The last one I got, I scored on craigslist for $160 used. They're perfect for in the truck since you can get them in a variety of small sizes, anywhere from like 8" up to 12". This last one I got is the 10.1" version.
