Default need some help guys

ok so as some of you know i got some probs with my truck dealer claimes HPOP, IPR, ICP, ICP pig tail, batteries and oil change for $2781...

i dont have the money to throw at this truck like i thought. im not convinced the hpop is bad. i have no leaks, oil level in cab doesnt fluctuate and i just dont want to believe its that because its the most expencive part

so i have 2 questions
1. if it is my hpop will the hpop upgrade kit be enough to fix it
2. can some one show me a pic or some what detailed instructions on where the icp is so i can unplug it and see if driving symptoms change i know its under the turbo in the back but i cant seem to find it there is just too much in the way does the turbo need to be removed just to see it or am i over looking it (03 6.0L)

symptoms: truck will start with in 3 sec or less first time. once the truck gets warm and i turn it off it wont start until it cools down a bit. when im on the freeway and i lay on the throttle it goes no where. it drives as if im towing a boat up a hill. i think i may have seen smoke today but when i see smoke i assume head gasket so i kept my eyes off the rear view mirror haha because if it were the head gasket id rather not know not now at least its been a rough month haha

the only code i pulled was for the ICP

3 more questions
what are the symptoms of a failing ICP
what are the symptoms of a failing HPOP
while im in the valley is there a way to clean the IPR and what are its symptoms its failure

thanks guys i know im asking a ton its just i have a week to fix the truck then i have to go back to work and im pressed on $700 or so. im just trying to replace the parts that are absolutely failed not the ones that are going out or close to it. i just dont have the money to spend currently but i need to get the truck running at least till feb

ok, check for smoke! it can help diagnose problems.
also if you can get your hands on a scanner you can check if the icp, ipr, ect. are working properly. and if they say your batteries are bad have them load tested.

dealerships DONT KNOW everything

first of all what area are you in, might be someone nearby to help you.
the icp sensor is accessable from underneath, I couldn't do it with my big hands but my boy was able to. there is a heat shield between the drivers side up pipe and motor, that will need to be removed, then there is a foil heat wrap that is wraped around the ICP itself, it has snaps on it, take that off then there is a small metal clip on the connector that just flips up if I remember right. I had to make a socket to fit it, used a socket then I welded a 3/8 into the end of it so just the head sits on the outside of the socket, I welded it from the inside of the socket, I had to do that because with the socket on the sensor I had no room for the socket wrench to fit on it, if you have a shorter-deep socket of that size it will work

I'm in orange county ca. i just got back from changing the oil at a buddies house and yes it is smoking out of the exhaust but only when I accelerate from a stop and I have to floor it to get it up the hill to my parents house. I tried finding the icp and I couldn't see it there is just too much in the way

since we moved threads here...remind me...have you checked the FICM? Do you have access to a scanner?

$2700 seems like an awful lot to me... however it wouldn't be really out of the ordinary if you did have to replace these parts...

well guys it finally bit the dust... drove it to get some things pulled into a gas station got fuel and it wouldnt start. well being as ive ran into this issue before and normally it would start after it cooled down a little so i sat around for a bit 30 min later tried starting and nothing.. waited another 30 and still nothing my impatitence got the best of me and i ended up trying ever 5 min after the initial hour of waiting now batteries are dead and it had to be towed home. so i guess the only thing i can do is throw money at the thing and hope it works tomorrow im gonna get the hpop and 2 batteries along with the icp and a nice cold one to help me forget how much i just spent haha wish me luck guys

btw i have yet to find a good write up on how to replace any of it like what i should take off to get to these parts and such hell i still cant locate the icp but if any one has some info to share on how to do this id greatly appreciate it or if any one wants to give me their phone number in case i run into a prob that i just cant figure out that would be super cool too

thanks guys i appreciate the help

I know when my HPOP went it did the same thing - just crank and crank.

Lately I had the CEL come on and stay on for a period and then would go out for a while. It was hard starting when cold and I would crank the heck out of it. Had the batteries checked and I had a bad battery. Once I replaced the battery the CEL has not come back on. It still won't start on cold mornings unless plugged in so I am pretty sure it is the glowplug system - Being a "newbie" I'm still trying to figure that all out.

Good luck!!

Brondon-If you are comfortable around a motor there are a couple of ways you can go about it. There is a video on youtube showing how to get to it removing only the degas bottle, turbo and alternator. There are a few threads on other sites none that are pictured walk throughs but they tell you the more conventional way to go about it and that is removing everything on top of the motor including the intake manifold.

bkmac-have you checked your FICM? Instructions in sticky top of section. If the fuel isnt properly atomizing due to a failing FICM it will exhibit a cold start issue.

Yes I did and it tested perfect. The truck is pushing 158,000+ and it has original glowplugs and injectors and it was the original batteries. The truck spent a lot of time in Montana in the winters so they all got a good work out
