Should I be able to turn the HPOP?
Just finished installing an upgraded branch tube adapter.
I'm wondering whether I screwed up my HPOP.
I followed the instructions, which is to place the HPOP in the vice and replace the old branch tube adapter with the new one that doesn't have an STC fitting. This went well except I tried to turn my pump while it was in the vice and it wouldn't budge. I don't know whether this is normal, since, I didn't try to turn the pump outside the vice.
At this point I'm worried that I may have ruined the pump by tweaking it in the vice.
Does this sound possible? I have a very large vice that has a lot of clamping pressure. Thinking back on it now, I should have tried to wedge the pump into the vice in a way that held it, but did not required tightening down the vice so much.
Does anyone know what the failure mode is for the HPOP?
Is it going to send metal shavings through my engine if it fails?
How soon will I know whether it has failed and will it be too late to recover from, without ruining my motor?
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking (tough call). I certainly would be kicking myself if the HPOP trashed my engine. I think I would also be upset if I had to do the breakdown again. It took me 6 days of work to get where I am. I don't wrench for a living. If it were 30 years ago this job would be done in a 3 day weekend, but, with my age and lack of experience with diesels, I have to go slow.

Sorry, my ride has 81,000 miles on it.
It's been very reliable until last week, when it left me stranded.
I've been reading the diesel forums since 06, and collecting enough information to allow me to do all my own service. I think the motor is in really good shape, other than the common issues that are reported by others. I think after I get it put back together it should give me another 80,000 miles before I need to do anything else to it.
I know I'll need a turbo some day, and yeah probably injectors as well, but, at this point I like the truck and look forward to putting 300,000 miles on it before I sell it to someone who needs a good ride. By that time, I'll be taking a nice sedan fishing. And no more landscaping for me...I would be about 70 at that point.

Have you tried turning it out of the vice? You should be able to turn it, on install specs want backlash on the gear so that is a clear indicator that you should be able to turn it. Tolerance is tight on pumps and it sounds like that you had it squeezed down in the vice, thus unable to turn it. try clamping it down by bolt tabs leaving the body of the pump free.

The idea of tying it down with the bolt holes is a good one. I may just make a fixture out of hardwood that fits into the vice to hold the pump. I'll write that one down for next time, if there is one. I'm hoping the tightness in my pump is normal, but, who knows, I may be replacing the HPOP in a week or so.

Everyone that returned feedback to my question says they can't turn the pump and that's great news for me...I thought I trashed my HPOP.
Now I'm fairly confident it's OK.
Hopefully, I'll start it up this week. Finished the oil cooler rebuild and installed it last night. I still need to replace the stand pipe and dummy plug on the passenger side, install the Bulletproof Diesel EGR cooler and then button it up, which will probably take me the rest of the week in evenings. I'm back to work, so I don't have 6 hours a day to work on it like last week.

I'm wondering what led you to disconnecting the batteries, but, that's not important.
Since it runs better with the batteries disconnected, it's most likely running better because the voltage is higher with the batteries disconnected.
First I would measure the voltage with the batteries connected. If the voltage is less than 11 volts, I would take the batteries down to an auto parts store, like Auto Zone and get the batteries load tested.
Once you've got batteries that pass the load test, I would re-run the vehicle and see whether this solves your issue.
If the voltage is greater than 11 volts, I would test the FICM voltage.
There are a lot of posts on the forum that tell you how to do that.
Let me know what your results are and I can give you some tips from there.

Well it's running again. I think I can say that not being able to turn the HPOP by hand doesn't indicate there's something wrong with it. The truck seems to run fine. It starts in 1 to 1 1/2 seconds, which was what it did when I drove it off the lot new in 06.
All in all, I think the repairs were a big success.
Now it's on to better things, like installing my PowerMax Turbo.
