6.0 love? hate?
#21
I'm not even going to get into this, since most of this info is posted almost daily.
It's a love/hate relationship with my 6.0. I think if you keep them 100% bone stock and WORK them, they hold up great. I have several friends with TONS of miles on bone stock 6.0's, that were used for work and have no issues. A lot of their issues stem from NOT being used to work, and idling a lot.
I have one buddy with 180k miles on an 05 CC/LB 4x4 bone stock up til 170k, now runs SCT.
I have another buddy with an 06 cc/sb on 12" of lift, 40" tires, has 245k miles on it, with stock original headbolts and only thing on oasis report was one single egr cooler back at about 40k miles.
My truck has 85k miles and has had headgaskets done 2x now, a few injectors, a trans, egr cooler, one head, you name it. BUT, I've been running race tunes since about 25k miles. I cause most of my problems, but I also fix them.
I've found the key element to owning a 6.0 (especially one with a warranty) is finding a mechanic competent enough to fix them. 90% of the time these said mechanics can NOT be found at the FORD dealership. I haven't had one good repair yet come from 5 different dealerships, and most of the mechanics haven't a clue how to diagnose or fix a 6.0 properly. Most of my issues I have are reoccurring issues the dealerships can never fix right the first time. Can't imagine why there has been so much money dumped into warranty repair for 6.0's.
I've seen this somewhere else, but it rings true: "The level of happiness of a 6.0 owner boils down the the competency of their mechanic"

they are. Theyre a piston eating, egr popping, front crank seal wearing, radiator blowing, hpf system failing turbo killing bomb. i love em they make me money. every single one of them should be bought back or repowered by a 6.7. Ive installed on a kids truck (daddys truck with daddys money) 09 crew cab lariat an egr delete kit, arp studs, egr oc delete, doc dpf delete and a 6 inch lift and 38 inch super swampers. Kid installed a chip and 1 month later came in with a skip for cyl 4 and 7 assumed failed injectors performed fuel mist test nothing performed manual compression test, gauge read 0 for both cyls, shoved bore scope down glow plug hole both pistons MIA. Stock form they eat pistons especially in 350-550 dump trucks, roll backs, or any other commercial hard working application.

For whats its worth, I don't have a stitch of problems out of mine 6.0... Treat it like hell (tuners with large hp gains with no other work done) expect failure but, treat it well (service service service) minimal issues.

if you had any sense youd be all over that 6.0... just sayin.. lot of people complain about em because they had a buddy that had one that broke or they had one and beat the crap out of it and it broke basically people that dont do stuff the way there supposed to with there trucks are the people that break em then complain about em and down talk them. some guys do everything right and have bad luck and i feel for them but not the guys who think if you have a 6.0 your not gonna hang... thats just my 2 cents... i get sick of people bitching about the 6.0 the 6.4 the 6.what ever it is. it gets old. there all expensive pains in the butt to keep going down the road they will all break at one point or another they all run good it dont flippin matter. i like the 6.0 and i catch stuff for froma few of my cummins buddies but none of there trucks will stay with me racing or pulling so... any way hope my rant helped...

some guys do everything right and have bad luck and i feel for them but not the guys who think if you have a 6.0 your not gonna hang... thats just my 2 cents... i get sick of people bitching about the 6.0 the 6.4 the 6.what ever it is. it gets old. there all expensive pains in the *** to keep going down the road they will all break at one point or another they all run good it dont ******* matter.
And your even more correct on an expensive pain in the *** to keep going down the road. Everything on a superduty is expensive be it gas or diesel.
I only like the 6.0 because i make money off it and theyre the only diesel that sounds amazing straight piped from the turbo back or stacked. but would i own 1? absolutley not. I wont own a ford, you cant convince me that ford builds anything reliable. 5.4 had one. Turd, thank god i rolled it when i did. chevy 4.8s would out run it out tow it. 5.4/6.8 2 or 3 valve are garbage. Exhaust manifold studs break in the heads all the time, exhaust manifolds always crack, neither 2 or 3 valves have any power, 3 valves are infamous for cam phaser failures, and theyre lovely when you go to change spark plugs and break off in the head. the rotunda tool is garbage to remove them with, thats why i bought the matco extractor.
maybe id own a 6.0 if diesel fuel was cheaper, and had 1000s to dump into the engine, but i dont see that as being practical.
Thus i am the only other technician that doesnt own a ford and refuses to own a ford and everyone cracks up seeing me in a ford dealership uniform getting out of a chevy.

Yeah your absolutley right, there are guys that baby them and i end up tearing thier turbos apart to clean them or replace the CHRAs because the unison ring sticks to housing from not being ran like theyre supposed to, Theres guys who use em for thier intended purposes such as towing and hauling, and i end up putting head gaskets or egr coolers in left and right. Theres guys who have thier oil changed every 3k miles and still end up with high pressure oil leaks. Theres guys who go through injectors galore up here as well as ficms, 6.0 is a **** poor design, why international didnt run external hi pressure oil lines to the oil rails like they did with the 7.3 or make the stand pipes 1 piece and thread into the branch tubes, Why did they use stretch bolts and only few of them to hold the heads down? If international had thier **** together thier engineers would have built the top end of the motor a bit better...

Don't blame it on International, didn't they intend for this engine application to only have 175hp? Then FERD made it 325 and with emissions crap on top.
I can't really argue about anything else you've said, most of it is spot on. I like everything else about my Ford over the others though. The exterior is tough looking, while still be nice, they're built like a dang truck, and the driveline is pretty tough.
BTW, my fuel costs me almost nothing, and it can only be done on a 7.3 or 6.0, so it is the primary reason I am driving this truck. vegistroke FTW!
