K&N came with the truck when I bought it. If it's that bad I'll switch it. I have been driving Ms Daisy for now to see what I can get. Sounds like I'll do the extreme street, street for towing since for now my towing doesn't exceed 10K and it has better torque than the tow tune - but I'll talk to Eric about that, and extreme race.
For what you're doing, the stock filter is the best hands down, BUT it's a PITA to change, and costly. I'd go with a dry filter setup, and a good one, like AFE. You can do your own searching for K&N, but if it was me, I'd trash it, or sell it on ebay. We wont get into that here, just search and you'll see all the threads on it.
Personally, I'd get the towing tune if you tow, it's just flat out awesome, shifting is spot on, power is good for anything. I use it for towing a 5klb camper. You'll love that tune and it will make towing fun. Slap the tow/haul on and let her eat.
If I had to do it all over again.... I'd get:
Towing: for towing
Street: for everyday driving, and winter driving (winter driving with hot tunes is a nightmare)
Extreme race/street: for when you're planning on horsing around and beating up on mustangs.
You'll soon find 3 tunes isn't enough and the dilemma arises to which tunes do I want to load on the X-cal today? haha
At the end of the day, it's your money though and no 3 tunes will satisfy everyone. We all have different needs.

I got the the Extreme Street tune from IDP and honestly i dont like it very much. On the low end it barrels out smoke and fuel mileage seems to suck on this tune. thats driving under 70. I have full egr delete head studs airaid filter and straight pipe. So i went back to running my canned street tune from sct with no smoke and better mileage.
And yes i called idp to ask them about it and they said id have to buy another tune.

Did you buy that tune from them? They can tweak that individual tune without issue. Ex-street is basically their hottest tunes for stock headbolts, without the converter lock up, of course it's going to smoke until the charger lights, that's how you get power, more fuel. You'd probably be more satisfied with their basic street tune.
You say mileage sucks, but yet you complain about barreling out black smoke, which to me tells me you're hard on the skinny pedal. In which case, no tune is going to yield great mileage. I get a hair over 15 hammering on my x-street tune. That's not bad considering I'm laying over 400 hp down at the wheels and moving a 7500lb truck around that has the aerodynamics of a barn.
I would stick with custom over the canned just for the extra insurance with the transmission.
You could always try a different vendor as well. Obviously one guy writing tunes will not please eveyrone. We all have different tastes and different expectations when it comes to tunes.
Try calling Matt @ Gearhead and talk to him about what you want.

Thats when i first got the tune it barreled smoke but then i started being easy and i mean EASY and it still seems to suck the diesel pretty good. IDk maybe its just my mind. Dont get me wrong we you romp down on it it will goooo. it just seems like im getting better mileage with the canned tune. I called them and asked if they could tweak it and they made it sound like i had to buy a smaller tune. That that tune was about the best it could be tweaked. i also told them all my upgrades. But idk

It's tough sometimes, because we just expect tunes to do certain things, and when they don't do what we want... well the best we can do is contact our tuner. I will say Eric has always been extremely quick to respond when I call or email (and Tedd too for that matter). It's possible they just don't think they can change the tune enough to suit your needs, or what you'd end up with would be their street tune anyways. They usually change things like shift points, or lockup. My guess is they just figured what you were asking for to be changed would have essentially resulted in what is known as their "street" tune.
The beauty of having the SCT is you can try out a bunch of different vendors too!

Extreme street rocks. You wont get hardly any smoke off the street tune, but that's ok. The Street tune is still a really fun tune and the clean driving makes it nice if you're in the city or something. The x-street will only puff on take off and then once the turbo is lit you'll barely get a haze. Eric has excellent tunes.
Economy is a waste of money. The extreme race/street tunes will give the best mileage if you can keep your foot out of it.

I purchased 4 tunes from eric. The tow tune, street, xtreme street, xtreme race, I just kept the street tune saved in my email and never once used it and you can only have 3 tunes on the x3. I ran the xtreme street for the entire time i had my truck and put 23K miles on it all tuned. Loved every minute of it. My 05 was non studded and i deleted the egr cooler and replaced the oil cooler. Never once puked.
Tracked my old 94 mustang one night and it broke after 2 passes so i decided to run my truck since id paid for my track time. Loaded the xtreme race launched in 4w hi. Tailgate down, I launched at 18psi and snapped off an 13.92. Proudest day in my CC/LB with an 8" lift and 37's

the xtreme street is definately worth it. Plus innovative tuning cleaned up my trans shifting as well. always shifted so nicely no shift flaring like i had when stock.
Tracked my old 94 mustang one night and it broke after 2 passes so i decided to run my truck since id paid for my track time. Loaded the xtreme race launched in 4w hi. Tailgate down, I launched at 18psi and snapped off an 13.92. Proudest day in my CC/LB with an 8" lift and 37's

I would get tow, x street, and x race. However when you load the x race you arent going to want to take it off anyway . I like the converter lockup and I get better mileage around town with the x race. Also any truck with a the blue spring and good fuel pump will be able to handle SCT tunes. Hand calculated 18-21 hwy with x street and god knows what around town FWIW
