Default A good diesel Mechanic in CA.

Any one know of a reliable / trust worthly Mechanic in CALIF . Santa Cruz or San Jose Area? I have 2003 Ford Super Duty 96K Stock Truck Crew Cab.

Lots of white smoke from the tail pipe. I will change the EGR valve tonight, never been cleaned (96K). I really hope its not a EGR cooler or headgasket, although I am losing coolant.

Thanks guys!

Left Coast Diesel in Concord is a good one. I have been there for a few items myself. Sounds like your cooler went.

Definitely sounds like cooler to me. EGR valve wouldn't cause you to burn coolant like that, a cracked EGR cooler will. This is classic symptoms.

Just look up bulletproof EGR coolers, it's the new hot ticket for guys in Cali who have to deal with emissions nonsense still.

Default A big Thanks

A great big thanks to everyone. I replaced the EGR Valve anyway, again thanks to this site that was a piece of cake-20 minutes. I''ll have to find a mechanic, not sure I want to take it to Santa Cruz ford, not very reliable.

Not sure whos closer then Left Coast Diesel. But if your able to , take it to Duprat Ford in Dixon. They have the best service and tech of any Ford dealers that I know of. Just recently took my truck in for the CEL light. Code showed bad glow plug. They checked and confirmed. But also a couple bad injectors. Still wasnt ideling right so they went further and found my oil cooler pluged and a pinhole leak in my egr and on top of that they reconditioned my turbo. All was under warranty so it didnt cost me a dime. But glad they went above and beyond what most dealers or private shops do. Truck has been running like a dream since then.

I second Left Coast Diesel in Concord. You will not be disappointed. They head studded bulletproff egr'd among lots more to my truck and I have no complaints. Fast service and very knowledgeable. Eric told me when I was there for studs that they had done over a hundred six liters last year (studs, egr and oil coolers). They will inspect your heads for flatness etc. Not just another mechanic shop. Check their web site you will not regret it.
