I'm not sure I completely agree with #2 there. There are times when I leave mine unplugged in the frigid temps it struggles to start if I don't leave the GP's on for a little while after the light goes out.

The plugs stays on for 90-120 seconds once the key is turned on. The GPL length and cycle is determined by IAT and EOT.
Glow plugs are hard on batteries and they are even harder on batteries that are not good ^^^^^ like the OPs.
Either way the OP needs to check his FICM and it is a very good possibility that those weak batteries killed it

Dead alternater = dead new batteries quick.
Dead batteries = killed your FICM
Killed FICM = Hard/No cold start
Dead batteries = killed your FICM
Killed FICM = Hard/No cold start
i show a fault with the ficm....

Do you buy after market ...or stuck with Ford
my truck is a bitch to start in winter....has to be plugged in for 4 hours...
Are they easy to change....
