Tuners and Intakes for '06 stroker
I'm a first time diesel owner. I just bought a 2006 F350 4x4 6.0L. It has never had any mods done to it other than the straight pipe. I'm wanting to know which air intake system in combination with what tuner yall would recommend for my truck. I'm not a county fair truck puller or much of a hot rodder so, I'm looking for a little more power and better MPG. I'm currently getting 16 mpg all stock. What would you recommend and what kind of mileage can I expect with normal daily 60 mph flat land driving? So far I'm interested in the EDGE evolution CTS tuner and the AFE full metal power intake system. Am I on the right track here? or am I way off? I gotta try to keep my cost around $800. I know that's kinda low considering the mods that are available but, for the time being that's gonna have to do. I would really appreciate any tips on maitinance of this truck or advice on how to make it better. (i gotta make this thing last me 5 years)

Get an SCT SF3 or X3 from one of the main tuners (Eric @ Innovative, Doug @ GoGo, Vivian @ Quicktrick, or Matt @ Gearhead) tell them what you're looking for (something mild I assume) and they will help you with the tuner. Keep the stock intake and save your money. No need to replace it now and stock intake will catch a LOT more dirt than any aftermarket setups. If you insist, I like the AFE stuff a lot. Use a dry filter. I use the proguard 7 dry setup from AFE.

Yea SCT provramers are the only way to go on the 6.0 and the stock intake is really good for anything less than 500 hp the only bad thing is they are a little high to replace them. The EGR delete is a good idea if you do I you might as well replace the oil cooler if your truck has any miles on it when you do the egr delete they can both be bought off e-bay for less than 200.00 each. But for now if I was you I would get a SCT programer with mild tunes if you have no gauges and a coolant filter. Coolant filters are prety much a must for the 6.0 dieselsite makes a good one.

Exactly. If I had $800 to spend... $425 for SCT with free custom tunes (without the extreme upgrade, since you've said you want to stay mild), a coolant filter kit form dieselsite.com (I believe he's a vendor here now too, they run around $135), and an EGR delete setup from RCD on ebay (can be had for under $200).
You should be under $800 shipped for all of that and on your way to a much healthier/faster/stronger truck.

SCT is easy to use, but hard without having one in your hands to play with. Don't bother getting it on ebay cause you're going to have to spend more to buy the tunes, where as if you buy it directly from Innovative or one of the other tuners, you get the tunes for free. Tunes from Innovative are $65 a piece for standards, $80 for extremes and $165 for a bundle of three tunes, so factor that in to your ebay prices.
AFE is what I would get for an intake, but if I did it over again, I wouldn't even bother putting an intake on. Stock is excellent.

You want to use one of the well known reputable tune writers to make sure you get quality tunes and if you need help they are there for you. There are guys that try to write tunes for all kinds of vehicles, cars trucks ect. I would stick with the guys that drive these trucks and know how they work. I use Eric but the others listed earlier all have good reps. Stick with the stock intake for now, you will want to spend that money on something else.

Most of the ones on ebay are from nobodies. The guys I would get tunes from I can count on one hand. Lots of those guys on ebay are more Mustang oriented and "try" to write tunes for diesels. Do like papachuck said and get tunes from a reputable vendor. If any of you have ever run a crappy tune you know what I'm talking about. I have had a couple. One the shifting was so horrendous, it actually corrupted the other tunes on my SCT. I had to put my truck back to stock, delete all the tunes off of my SCT, re-load on good working tunes and reprogram the truck before it would go away. Pay the money for good tunes.
