well another no start issue on here. i have a 04 6.0 and when the truck sits for about 10 hours or so it will not start in the cold weather plugged in or not it dont matter. i have egr delete kit done. im gonna try changin the block heater element and the cord but i was just wondering what people thought. when i go out to start it, it cranks fine and fires and then dies. it will do this til the batterys die. lately ive been putting a torpedo heater under the truck for about 15min and then the truck will start with ease. i dunno if its a fuel problem or glow plugs or what.

Not any diesel pro but if it fires up and dies it may be a fuel problem, glow plugs or just to darn cold out. Do you have winter diesel fuel? I have started my truck up in very cold temps -35F not plugged in (with winter diesel) and it has started for <30 seconds and stopped, it was bucking like a rodeo bull and I am sure I have taken some engine life out of it. My glow plugs are good as I have plugged it in and let it warm up and then it will stay running. If your plug in heater is good you will here a sound in 5-15 seconds so I would check that out before you replace it. Try to cycle the glow plugs as I find that has helped out when it is very cold out.

Anyhow I just wanted to say that for my 04 Excursion I put a diesel heater on and if it runs for 30min my engine is at operating temp at -30F outside temp. My windows are partially clear as the heater core is hot. Check out the link below.

yeah i got winter diesel in it. however i do not hear a sound when the block heater is plugged in. im gonna change that out and see if it fixes it. its been in the lower teens around here and once its started in the morning and ran it will start with ease after that. im thinkin the prime on the fuel pump or whatever isnt holding or something

Sounds like glow plug issues to me...

 

problems still there. we had it on a computer and checked injectors, glow plugs etc. i took it to for got the update in it and still havin the problem. my fuel heater wasnt working but we later found out the fuel heater is not needed with the update and ford dont sell the fuel heater anymore

 

Have you checked your FICM Voltage?

And i believe Ford stopped Puttin the fuel heaters on the HFCMs in 05 as they found out the fuel was warm enough by the time it reached the cylinders

 

yeah checked the ficm multiple times. i checked it and we checked it when it was at the shop and it showed proper voltage both times

 

I gotta ask, did you check the voltage with key on/engine off, then while cranking and then while running?

 

the only time I have had a no start issue with my 04 it was the ICP sensor, my truck is an early 04 so the sensor is right on the HPOP and not on the pasenger side valve cover like the late 04 and on, the ones on the HPOP have had problems, my guess is too much pressure and heat right there, when it was going bad when it did start in the cold it REALLY sounded like a diesel and real rough. see if the sensor is on the valve cover, if not check thr bottom of engine and trans-if you see oil like it was a rear main seal it is most likely the ICP is bad, as a note if it is that sensor don't even attempt doing it from underneath like the books say, do it from up top a save a whole "day" for the job
