engine removal

I would suggest it's a clearance issue. You have no room as it is in the engine compartment. Assuming you are pulling the cab off and remove the radiator and intercooler you might be able to squeeze it out with the tranny on, but you would likely have to get the truck high off the ground for the tranny to clear.

I guess i havent done enough research on these trucks yet, I never thought you would have to drop the tranny to get the engine out, I am taking the head off now because the truck has a major issue with #7 cylinder. so i am gonna take a peak with the head off, then if the piston is junk i will pull the engine. i am new to these 6.0. I am gonna try to get the engine out without removing the cab. with the heads off i should have more room too. thanks guys for all the helpful info!

ron b, would you care to elaborate on how you did it? I'm currently trying to pull the heads off my 04 and I can't get past the rocker box on the right bank, much less the head. Either I pull the heater box out and hope I can get clearance or I'm gonna have to gut the front end and pull the engine.

I just removed the box cover which is a bear to get at the screws to do it. There are a few small hoses, etc around it you need to remove also, and a small bracket above it. Once you get the cover loose, you have to pull it forward and upward and it will come out with the vavle cover still on but it's a bear. We just loosed the ac cooler, i believe thats what it is, the rad under the cover and twisted it forward without discharging it. That will give you enough room to get at the cover bolts and remove the cover. Then remove the high pressure oil rail. we put two slices in the other part of the box to get the rear bolt removed. Put slice in to the rib about 1 1/2 inches in and just bend the flap in so you have room to get the bolt out. We then taped the slits when going back together to stop air leakage.
Hope this will help you, if I can be of more help, just let me know.
I didn't hear of removing the cab until after we had the heads off. We didn't put the slits in until we were going back together and that was the only way to get that bolt back in. Wehad left that bolt loose but in to remove the head. It would be easier to make the slits and remove the bolt.
I was also told to stud the block and now use new bolts. Iused the bolts since I didnt have the time to get the studs in. I've been told the studs do a better job.
