2003 6.0 Power Loss Grinding Noise While Towing Up Steep Grades
-Complete stock 2003 6.0 Excursion w/122k-owned since new
-Runs great until under load w/5500lb boat going up steep hills
-Significant power loss, black smoke and grinding noise coming from engine compartment.
-Dealer could not replicate-no codes thrown-although tech stated oil temp was out of spec and oil cooler was restricted-
-temp gauges all indicated normal-if oil temp was out of spec why no code????
Any thoughts appreciated
thanks-TM 0802

Why would it throw a code for oil temp? The only thing that will happen is once it reaches a certain temp, the gauge will magically go to "max" and it will flash on the dash "check gauges". Out of spec oil temp could mean that it is out of spec in relation to the coolant temp, the two should never be more than 15 degrees apart, if it is, it's a sign of other issues like a clogged oil cooler, which will lead to blown headgaskets.
Black smoke and a grinding noise sounds like you have a turbo issue. Black smoke is there because the turbo isn't spooling properly and you have too much fuel and not enough air.
Take your intake off and look on the intake side of the turbo and see what it looks like.

Yes a lot of them have issues with the vanes sticking, but grinding noise usually isn't one of they symptoms... sounds more serious than just a sticky turbo to me, but again, hard to tell from here...

Code Re:
Thank you gentlmen
Talked to the tech regarding code-he agreed it should have thrown code due to the amount of power loss, BUT the oil temp was not out of tolerance enough to warrant it...
thank you for your replies-I'll check the intake.

intake side of turbo seems fine-nothing unusual-
probably will have to take a tech for a ride and replicate while towing-

Grinding Noise
Help! I read other posts but got an issue I hope someone out there can help with...
Got a 2003 F-250, 6.0 diesel, 4x4 crew cab with 76,000 miles on it. This year while towing my boat (about 4500 lbs.) I got a rubbing sound while pulling the boat up a slight hill and making a curve to the left. So far, I've replaced the carrier bearing and all the U joints on both the rear and front drive shafts. It sounds like the rubbing noise/vibration is coming from the left front of the truck... Maybe the left hub/wheel??? Seems to happen when I'm towing. Doesn't do it with normal driving. It would seem if it's a wheel bearing that the noise/grinding would be constant. The breaks are good. Could it be the locking hub(s)? Also, I've added the anti-friction lubricant to the rear end.
Any help would sure make me more at ease while towing. Thanks in advance.
