Default 03 smoking like a tar kettle

Hey, guys. My boss mans 03 is acting up. We just changed the fuel filters hoping that would help but it didnt. When it gets up to normal temp and you go to pull a hill it starts to cut out and smoke. I have seen this before on a truck that the egr went bad on. Does that sound like it could be a possible cause and if so could we just delete it with a egr delete kit.

Thanks for the help, Heath

Yes it's a possibility. Also possible that the turbo vanes are sticking. Is there any codes? What year is the truck? Any mods on it now? You can take the EGR valve out and take a look at it. If it's gunked up and sticking, you can clean it really well and retry it to see if it helps.

The truck is a 03. It has no mods and I havent checked the codes. He has it at the stealership now. I guess we will see what they say. If it is the egr though can he delete it and it be ok.

Yes, what color is the smoke? I never even noticed that when I responded, I just assumed black smoke and I don't know where the heck I got that from...

Thanks for the help guys. Ended up being the egr valve after all. They said it was stuck open. I assume they either replaced or cleaned it up. I told the boss that if it ever did it again he should just delete it. Are there any downsides to deleting it.

It won't pass emissions if you delete it.
