Question White smoke??? Help Plz

Hey yall I just started up my truck this morning and it started really rough it shook the whole damn teuck and a pretty big cloud of white smoke came out of the exhaust...and it smelled funny...now I unplugged it and idk if i had it plugged in good last night so is it just cause it was cold? Or could it be a sign of a egr leak or gasket leak?

I would say it was because of the cold weather. did you give it time to warm up and see if it got any better?

I agree. Sounds like a normal cold start. If it keeps doing it after you start driving, then I would start digging deeper.

If it had a sweet smell to it it's coolant, but a kinda harsh nose stinging smell its just unburnt diesel as your engine is still cold and not completely burning it...

If it chugs really hard it could be the Fuel Injection Control Module. I had the same issue that you are describing. The truck would start fine when it was pluged in, but smoke until warmed up.
There is also an air temperature sensor in the intake ( i can't remember the name of it, $20 part you can try first.)

It could be a number of things. You can also test your FICM to see if it is pushing the 48 volts it needs to be.

Here is an excellent read in diagnosing cold start issues and how to test and repair your FICM by soldering it (beats paying the $1000 for a new one and tuning).

Hope that helps some guys.
