Default Long term 6.0L reliablity? Looking to buy

Hey guys, I had an 05 6.0L that went back to ford. Im in the market for another dielsel and had my heart set on the new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500... but I'm looking at $42,000 plus 9% NYS sales tax, reg, it's gonna cost me 50G...

Now poking around on the net I am finding 05-07 6.0L fully loaded, crew cab long beds for 20-25K most have 50,000 - 100,000 miles.

Now I know the new dodge will last me at least 100K thanks to warrenty, but If i can get a 50K fully loaded ford for HALF the price.....that doesn't seem bad.

I've been doing some research, It looks like for MPG and Long life, I need to get the EGT off road kit on there ASAP, did they every make a fix for the VVT plunger getting stuck, or was that attributed to the EGR system?

Is there anything else I should be very very concerned about?

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a brand new truck, but for something that I work with, and use everyday, I'm not sure if the nice NEW feeling is worth 20K extra.

Opinions Please.!!

head studs especailly if it had a tuner or your planning on using one. check if cooling system has been flushed and maintained properly (changed at reular intervals), oil cooler would be another thing to ask about(if it was replaced or is leaking). I've been through 2 oil coolers and was told when asked about it that was due to coooling system not being flushed and filled with new coolant every 45K, and once cause i used wrong antifreeze. didn't think it matter as long as didn't mix different types together. overall good motor and would buy again.

Hey yall i need some help. I am 18 and a college student i sold my old truck and scraped up some extra cash so i could get me a diesel. I wound up gettin an 03 powerstroke with a 6.0. At the time i didnt know bout the bad rep of the 6.0 goin bad. My truck has 172000 miles on it and seems to be goin strong. But i want to put exhaust and a ram air intake on it would that be to much extra power and cause the gaskets to leak? and what cani buy for a decent price like 300-800 dollars to help with egr problems. I need this truck to last me through college and then some and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

exhaust and intake wouldnt do much interms or causting you headgaskets to break (ive got an aem hd intake and 4" turbo back exhaust and a superchip and ive never blown one head gasket and that was when my gf was driving and thats bc i dont thing she say or felt some of the warning signs and kept driving it.

as for the egr delete DO IT...even if you have to pay more than you think DO IT...ive had 4 egr valves and 3 or 4 coolers but im under warranty so it wasnt to bad but when u have to start paying for it yourself it starts gettin expensive FAST...

as for headstuds once again with what u want to run right now you dont have to have them....>>>BUT<<<...they are a really good way to spend your money...especialy if you are doing an egr delete and can find a guy that can do headstuds cab on bc normaly he will cut you a break on the labor...

Sinister diesel has a kit for $300 and if you've had any kinda automotive wrench turning experience you should be able to do the delete yourself. the kit comes with instructions
