removing the egr cooler

Step one in the factory service manual is remove the intake manifold.
I haven't had a pre-05 (cast iron) HPOP cover off in quite some time, and I am not sure if you can do it without pulling the EGR cooler. On the later (aluminum cover) models, you can do it without taking the EGR cooler off, but it's a pretty tense procedure to not drop bolts down into that pump cavity.
For the work it takes, I would just school the intake off of there for piece of mind. Send it to a machine shop and get it washed out inside because it will likely be carboned up inside.
Why are you changing the HPOP? Low pressure?

I've had 'em so bad that oven cleaner doesnt even out a dent in it. Some of the ones around here are pretty bad inside, due to a lot of idle time, and fuel quality. And it's a 6.0

Thanks for the input and sorry for the delay getting back, I was driving home from philly and prob about 65 to 75 miles on the trip was coming to a red light and slowing down it turned green and went to give it some gas and nothing. It just died i checked the fuel and a couple other things and had no clue being my first diesel i took it to a shop and they sent it to the dealer. hence the bad hpop. Its all back together and i have a small exhaust leak that needs to be fixed but other than that its runnin like a champ. and again thanks for all the help!!!
