Let's say '05-'07, auto, 4x4, Crew Cab and staying under 40K miles.

What should a guy look for that may show future problems? What are the things to be afraid of?

Get the vin and get an oasis report. That will show every single bit of warranty work the truck has gone to the dealer for. That's a good start right there.

Well, yeah I know about the 6.0s and the HG issues and EGR issues. I'm pretty sure everyone does. I think most diesels today are struggling with an EGR problem in some form.

But what are the chances on a stock truck or even a truck with a mild programmer?

Does losing the EGR mean less of a possibility of a HG failure?

Is there something a guy needs to look at to try and see if a HG failure is in the near future?

nothing you can really check except to take the oil cap off while it's running and check for blowby, make sure there is no coolant in the oil. Stuff like that. No way to tell if the headgaskets are "weak"

Best thing to do is get the oasis first. Then jump on the 7 year 200,000 mile extended warrenty from Ford. These things will pop head gaskets stock so thats how that goes. Shoot me a vin and i'll check it out for you.

Noone else has any advice?

What do they get for mileage? I keep hearing they can't get a crew cab up to 20mpg. Is that true?

I've had my 2wd Crewcab long bed right under 20 at about 19.8 a few times. I'm sure if I ran 65 instead of 70 I could get 20.
