School Me On Buying A Used 6.0
#12
My advice would be dont buy it. Find an older 7.3 you can be happy with or go with a cummins. I know a lot of guys wont buy anything other than a ford, and thats fine. The trucks themselves are damn near perfect. Its the motor that would send me running. This is just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

!
Charleys son just ditched a 05 6.0
he had it for 2 years and 3 sets of injectors, a fuel pump and that EGR valve
wasnt runnin fer crap the day of the trade
odd thisg is all the work was done at the Ford shop but nuttin shows up on a carfax search.....it shows clean
I have 2200 bucks into that truck and Charley has a bit more than that

do you want the 6.0 because of the newer truck wrapped around it or because you really want a 6.0? there are lots of 00-03 trucks for sale, granted they have some miles on them now but they are a pretty proven platform.
i wouldnt own a 6.0 from 2003, 2004, or 2005. the ones from 2006 and 2007 seem to be better. at least thats the word i get from guys i know who have them.

i think thats the biggest downfall to the 6.0's instead of actually getting into it and finding what was actually causing most of the problems they would just continue to slap new parts on it. thus they wouldnt actually SOLVE the problem.. it was more ike they just wanted to push it under the rug

there are ways to get the 6.0 to run good even great. its the lack of knowledge and all the people that talk bad about them. first off the early years had high pressure problems that are now solved in the newer ones.the early years were a pain to work on this cause the timing setup is in the rear of the motor. second the turbo was designed to be run under real clean fuel conditions and under those conditions it performes well but the carbon builds prevents the turbo from working properly.so add another fuel filter system like or something equivalent.the heads have two problems 1 is there are only 4 bolts around each cylinder which causes alot of stress on the the torque to yeild bolts which are used from the factory. so install head studs to solve the problem as they are torqued to over 200 ft lbs. 2 problem is the valve train just wasn't designed for longjevity in my opinion seen alot of valve jobs. some from high egt's taking there toll on valve seats and some just from valve wear.in order to fix these problems the cab has to come off do to the ac box being in the way of taking out the head bolt. which cost more in labor.the egr and cooler are just problems all in there own. fix is egr delet kit.the injector problem would also aid from cleaner fuel. the tolerances are just so tight in there that water or any contaminates just ruin them. and keeping your oil clean will help.

If you really want to I suppose. if you're offended by the fact that I don't prefer them, well, sorry you feel that way...but if you're up for it, look me up when you hit 380,000 miles on your 6.0 and I'll buy you a beer.
