Buy used motor or rebuild?
Ok... I have a 05 6.0 with 182,000 on it. The truck has full exhaust, sinister y-pipes, egr delete, xdp coolant filter, and a bullet proof water pump, that is about all I have done aftermarket to it. I now have a SCT X4 tuner but nothing to monitor EGTs. Bought the truck 5 years ago and has had a hot start issue the entire time. I have gone in multiple times, replaced the HPOP and all fittings attached, stand pipes dummy plugs, re o-ringed the injectors, re o-ringed the injector cup nipples, inspected the LPOP, had the branch tube replaced, oil cooler was replaced with the EGR delete. It has had a tuner on and off since I owned it.
I recently towed my ford focus from Texas to Michigan and assumed I had a clogged oil cooler prior to the trip but had no time or money to replace before I left(probably why I am at where I am now). Prior to the trip I put hot shots secret stiction elimination with an oil change, replaced the fuel filters. Once I got to Michigan the truck ran outstanding, I figured out the hot start issue would only happen when the oil temp was above 190 degrees. Then about 3/4 of the way through winter it wouldn't start at 100 degrees only when it sat overnight plugged in. The truck also stalled intermittently during the coldest days of winter but would start up and drive a short distance then stall again. I assumed the diesel froze but I was using treated fuel and an anti geller every time I put fuel in it.
Now I have blow by coming out of the oil dipstick, it runs like absolute **** and died on my the other day when it was 80 degrees and sunny. Oil temp was at 245 and coolant was around 205.
I have probably done more harm than good with the clogged oil cooler, and ether but it was my only vehicle and needed it when I did. So now I am at a cross road. I can't sell it cuz its broke and won't get what I owe. I have enough to buy a rebuild kit and do it myself but I don't know if that would be a good course of action.
I assume I have injector, piston, it has contribution/balance codes on #7 and #4 and glow plug circuitry codes and many more I would assume. Just wondering what may be the best option on a budget.

How's the Focus running?
Seriously though, It's hard to say just how much damage you have with the engine in the truck now without a teardown. As far as a used engine swap, well...you have one of those in the truck now...a rebuild short or long block will set you back minimum $5000.to $6000 grand and a complete will double that. Not much help I know but only you can say what is best for you.
