Default 03 6.0 do or don't?

I'm looking for my first diesel and I found this 03 6.0 4x4 2003 Ford F-350 Pickup Truck | cars & trucks | Winnipeg | Kijiji it has 231,000km (143,000 miles). I know 6.0's have a bad reputation but this is a good deal so I thought i'd ask about it. it looks in good shape, is there anything I should ask him or look for on a 6.0l? I don't plan on doing a lot of towing and I'd probably just do exhaust, intake and a chip. what would I need head studs and everything to make this truck at all reliable?

See what mods were done and when. See how truck performs now, and drive it. If you can get to mechanic look for stored codes with diag tool. I love mine for what it's worth!

does the truck in the link I posted look like it has anything done to the engine like an egr delete or anything?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

the owner said in 2012 he put new injectors in and a new FICM as well

the truck is stock no deletes or studs

Egr is under intake on passenger side. You can plug ends go egr but most just eliminate it if they are that far in.

Looks like nice stock truck for the money!

do stock 6.0's stretch the headbolts and blow headgaskets? do they always need head studs?

Three major things that I would check? 1) is there any evidence that the degas bottle has been puking? 2) is there any diesel fuel/smell in the degas bottle. 3) is there any crankcase pressure? take the oil fill cap off and put your hand over it.
Any of these could lead to major engine work or replacement.

should there be some blowby coming from the oil fill cap? I heard the best way to check it is to set the cap on it and if it falls off it has excessive blow by, is this a good method?

If you mod them they have more of a tendency to stretch bolts and blow gaskets.

with just a chip, is there a high risk of that happening? would you be a lot better off to bulletproof it before a chip?

You can get a ficm tune from different vendors that adds 40, 80, or 100 hp. I have a 40 since I tow heavy sometimes and it really wakes it up! I didn't do studs yet but I'm doing gauges and supporting mods,( see sig) so I'm ready. Truck runs pretty good as is so tuning isn't high on list right now! I depend on mine for daily driver, would recommend backup transportation if you want to tune jic.
