If its ford - I just went thru that I have arp head studs so turns I had a cracked head - right before Xmas too sob so in go new heads with some fire rings that hurt the credit card

Note - I bought the truck with head studs done dont know why they didn't do heads at same time

yes its a 04 6.0 changed coolant and leaked out so its a tad low on coolant but enough to tun it and still no heat

Did you use new thermostat? Is the hose connected to control your heat hose coolant flow? I would see if heater hoses getting warm and make sure the air pump to control blend door is working. Would also check if controls functioning properly and not going into default?

If it was going to default he would have defrost and heat comming off that - yes it can hurt your engine if head gasket or heads or gone eventually cook your block = new engine
