Default White Smoke

03 F-250 super duty crew cab 8ft bed just bought on e-bay. Check engine oil at max line after 25 miles started blowing white smoke. Check engine oil - low! Crawled under truck found oil blowing back on right axle housing and dripping from tail pipe. What are most likely causes?

How many miles? Did you find where oil is coming from to coat axle? Does exhaust exit in front of axle or stock? You really need to look up front for oil leak. . Maybe it's IPR. Mine leaked but not that bad but was dripping down bellhousing. On newer (mid04 up) ford moved it to valve cover. Must see where oil starts from. .

Default White Smoke

Truck has 172k miles. Exhaust pipe is about 3 feet in front of the axle housing. Oil and white smoke are blowing out of the exhaust pipe. I checked the oil before starting the truck and found it at the max level after about 1 mile of travel the smoke started. After another mile I stopped and found only a trace of oil on the dipstick. Something cause a very rapid pumping of the oil out of the crank case and through the exhaust pipe. There is no leak or oil deposit up front it is as dry as I have ever seen up front.

I would check turbo. . .is oil clean? Look into valve cover and see how dirty inside. . . Gives you clue as to how truck was maintained. Did it come with warranty?

Default White Smoke

I'm taking the truck on a rollback to a diesel mechanic to have it checked over and find the cause for the white smoke and loss of oil. I read Dieselman's dissertation on the 6.0l and believe that the bearings in the turbo have possibly failed and the turbo has sucked the oil out of the sump and blown through the engine and out the exhaust. We'll see what the mechanic finds! hwtemplin1
