get the sct tuner, use the stock tune that comes on it for performance. on a stock truck you will put out a little bit of smoke when you get into hard but will also up your power and and up your mpg if your flooring it all the time. get a exhaust straight pipe if your state will allow and you will have plenty of power for just showing off but yet you wont waste tons of fuel all the time once again keep your foot out of it all the time and you shouldnt have a problem. unless you actually plan to use the truck for any kind of work then you dont really need any thing else done to it if your just trying to stay cheep. but like every one is saying the smoke if just money blowing right out of your tail pipe. so my suggestion try not to do it alot. besides if you can leave some one on the line or local stop light with out blowing a lot smoke why not jsut do that.
