Mdub707, thanks for the quick response and the valuable information. I'm dropping the truck off at lunchtime, so they have it overnight. They were advised that it runs like crap in the morning. I'm going to request they check the FICM and fuel pressure while they're at it ... just in case they shortcut me. I'll update you when I find out more.

Cheers!

Here's what they should be following for a hard start to see what's wrong with your truck:

When I dropped it off, I told the sevice writer that I wanted the tech to measure the voltage on the FICM and to make sure the fuel pressure was within specs. I got a call around 3pm from the service manager. He told me they would not be finished the diagnosis until tomorrow morning and assured me that they were checking the FICM, since the symptoms were suspect of a failing module. Sounds like they know what they're doing, so hopefully they'll have an answer for me tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

If it's indeed bad, DO NOT buy a new one. They're insanely expensive and it will just fail again at some piont. Don't even go for the new half shell, get it repaired by someone else. Let us know what you find out.

FICM is toast and not covered ... typical. Some recommendations, please. I need it fixed ASAP.

I just picked up the truck and she's running worse than ever. I got a price from them on a half shell ... $600 out the door. I thought that was decent, since the part runs around $450. What is the issue with the new Ford FICM units that should cause me concern? Have they not been upgraded to prevent the same thing from happening again?

I think most vendors have access to multiple new/reman units that are complete including 1yr warranty for around that or lower, you could even get 58v for only a few dollars more. But if there's anyway possible to go without the truck a little longer, get it reworked! mdub is it posdible to raise the voltage in the rebuild process?

I'm reluctant to repair my FICM. I've read a few threads on other boards that have had problems after the repair ... after using a reputable repair service, one that is spoken about on several forums. I'm sure they were few, but knowing my luck I'd end up with one. I think new is the only way to go.

Well, a little research and I stumbled across a replacement FICM power supply that is made by Dorman (part # 904-229).

Here is an interesting video related to the unit:

According to the information on the video, the power supply has been upgraded to prevent a reoccurence of the broken solder joints.

I've found the Dorman board for sale online for as low as $169; however, I am led to believe that International sells a half shell for under $150. I am going to call them tomorrow to verify this information, but I thought I'd throw it out there for those that might know for sure ... anyone? Sounds hard to believe, but the claim was made in a thread on a different site ... in fact, several threads have mentioned this to be true. International calls it an IDM bottom kit (part # 5010598R92).

The International half shell should be around $200. The Ford version is $400, a new FICM is about $900 and you'll need programming on top of that.

BPD makes a nice unit... there are other places that do remans as well, which should work just fine.

I question the quality of the dorman products. They make an oil cooler rebuild kit too and I've seen some stories of them blowing apart lately.

mysterync, yes it is. I've repaired dozens of them already. I have all the parts here to turn one of my spare 4 pins into a 58V unit and it just never seems to happen. Always too many other projects going on. I need a new soldering iron too... at least to tackle that project.

I don't have a good way to turn the 7 pins into 58V units yet, but never really looked hard at it either.
