cummins swap or 6.0 rebuild
just bought a 06 f350 4x4 crewcab xlt lariet 6spd fully loaded with leather and sunroof I paid 3k for it. the motor will run but it is getting fuel in coolent so i think the heads are shot the cummins swap is right at 5k. i found a set of heads off a 07 for 150 but i do not know if they will fit the 06 the build date is 10-05 I think i can do a rebuil for about 3k but i dont know what to do. I like the idea of the 12v cummins what do you guys think

For that price, it'd be hard to argue putting a cummins in. I'd be doing a CR myself, just for the ease of tuning (I'm definitely a clean power advocate). If you want to go mechanical route, DT365 fo sho. Carson Stauffer has a bunch of the stuff already made for that swap, and that thing will make the cummins look like a toy.
Rebuilding the 6.0 shouldn't be terribly hard or expensive either. You can use any year heads on any year 6.0, all headgasket sets come with the stepped dowels. You just need to buy the correct gaskets to match the heads you have. 18mm or 20mm. The injector hold downs are also different and I believe you would need matching rocker boxes as well.
Before you get too far into a swap, check your local laws about it too. Some places require the motor going in to be of the same year or newer for emissions reasons.
How did you get to your $5k for the swap price? Are you doing this yourself? What's your plans for power? What trans? Sticking with the 6 spd? A stock 12v is going to be somewhat of a pig pushing a big Ford around :o)

Update last night i bought a set of 07 6.0 heads hpop turbo and a bunch of other parts iam getting the 07 heads worked for 400 and a friend is going to rebuild the whole top end and do all the delets and studs for 2500 including all parts. the 12v swap was priced with mw doing all the work my self i was thinking of about 350hp out of the cummins after i did the swap but then i herd that the six speed was only good for about 525 on the torque so the cummins would eat the six speed for lunch. i do not want to get into a pissing match about the 12v cummins and 6.o so please do no attack me for my opinion. if i need to haul any thing i will pull it with my 98 dodge that has a 12v cummins in it. the ford was bought so my son and i could travel back and forth to his baseball games in the comfort of the crew cab. The fact that i bought the truck for 2600 helped convince the wife so i could keep my cummins when the motor is finished i will post pics the it is getting all new paint a small lift and 35 inch tires should be a good looking truck when i am finished with less than 10k in it that is my goal.

You would rather tow with the 12v? I own both... My 6.0 puts the 12v to complete shame when it comes to hauling my 8k+lbs RV. I would be willing to bet when your 6.0 is done... You don't drive that 12v anymore! Like I said.. I to have both and my 12v is up for sale now because I don't drive it. Nothing against the 12v... But for towing and daily driving... A tuned 6.0 is a lot better in my opinion

I hope that you are right about the 6.0 it is allot nicer that the 12v, but i still love the cummins. I was worried about a tuner on the powerstroke dont want to be doing the top end again hopefully i will get another 200k out of the rebuild.

6.0's are tow pigs man. The transmissions are awesome (I almost prefer the 5R110 to the ZF6, even for towing) and they loved to be worked. Especially if you put a good tow tune on. With the auto we can set up tunes to use the turbo like an exhaust brake as well.
If you're doing heads now, get the ARP headstuds so you don't have to worry about it later. It's an extra $425. Do it now, or you will likely regret it. EGR delete as well.

just got the truck home blew freeze plug out of block when i pulled it off the trailer. cleaned it out then popped the hood took the air filter off, it is not getting fuel in the coolent i found that it has blown two freeze plugs out of the driver side head one out of the pass head. Any thoughts ? the truck starts up and runs it dose puff a little blue smoke that smells like fuel i only ran it for about a minute to pull it off the trailer an up to my garage. i did find a 12v cummins tonight comlete for 1000.00 I dont know what to do with the truck i do not want to put a new top end with the bottom end having 200k miles on it. will the bottom end hold up? I found a place called blackwater diesel in norfolk that will sell me a reman 6.0 with head studs and a three year warrenty for 4400. Two years ago i did a 97 7.3 engine swap it was not that bad. How bad is this 6.0?
