Question Bad Injector?

I own a 06 F250 King Ranch 4x4 with 33" tires on 20" rims. No mods or programmers just over 130,000 miles. For the past two or three months I have noticed that once I start truck let it warm up and then start driving, there is blue smoke that comes out of exhaust and truck sound like it is skipping and runs REAL ROUGH (no real power). Once I get down road (about fifteen minutes) it smoothest out. HOWEVER IT IS GETTING WORSE. Fuel mileage is really bad, about 11 or 12 mpg. I pull a enclosed 10' trailer for work but truck does this with or without trailer. REALLY NEED SOME HELP GUYS I have read the thread about the FICM TEST WILL DO THAT TOMORROW. CAN SMELL A REAL INTENSE RAW FULE SMELL WHEN TRUCK IS IDLING. I am thinking bad injector or injectors? But don't really know. New to maintenance on diesel.

Check the batteries and the FICM first, if those check out it's likely an injector. Need to have a cylinder contribution test run. Have you tried reading for codes? It doesn't need to have the check engine light on to have codes...

No sir have not tried any codes. To be honest I don't have any way to read codes (have not bought a computer ). Can my local party's store read them for me and where would I get a cylinder contribution test done? Working on checking FICM. Going to have to find somewhere to get batteries load tested today also.

Need to find someone with AutoEnginuity close to you, or have to bring it to Ford likely for the cylinder contribution test.

The parts store can certainly try to read the codes, they usually do it for free. Worth trying.

Ok did FICM test. Key on 48.2 volts, key on cranking 48-49 volts, engine running 48.7 volts. Batteries load tested good. Looking for shop to get cylinder contrabution test done. Hopefully can get it done tomorrow.

Well got cylinder contabution test done this morning and found out that injector 1 and 2 are bad, injector 4 is going bad:. Shop that I had do the test is encouraging me to get a whole set of injectors put in and said it would cost around three grand . Dont know when or if any of injectors have ever been replaced since truck was built. It's a no brainer really just trying to figure out which way to go and who I am going to get money from . Thanks for all the help.

I did enquire about the installation of a progammer and was told it was probably not a good idea unless i was willing to do some extra work. Also was told that I should change my oil every 5000 miles. I am using motorcraft filters (both oil and fuel) and Delo 400 oil. Shop engouraged me to upgrade my oil cooler and EGR cooler. Is that good advice? Of course could not do any of that till I got injectors fixed.

Is there a good fuel additive that I can add to my fuel? I am currently using a Lucas oil fuel additive however not sure if these products will cause any harm.

When three lightbulbs in my house go bad I don't replace all of them... I replace the three that have gone bad. If you had money to burn, and are paying a shop to do it, it may save a bit on labor cost over doing them a couple at a time as they go bad... but not that much and you are replacing parts that could last forever on the chance that they may go bad in the near future.

Later,

Keith

Before replacing any injectors, I say add two bottles of rev-x and see if most of your issues go away...

I agree with Keith, there is no way I would replace 8 if three are bad. That's absurd and you're not really saving anything on labor because they're not that hard to get at.

If I was you, if you do dig in, I would do an oil cooler rebuild ($275 from Tousley), and delete the EGR cooler completely.

I used Lucas once, and haven't bought it since. I use Opti-lube XPD in my 6.0 and my TDI VW. Mostly order it online. I believe there is a link out in the main forum for additives where you can get it on sale (cheap shipping).
