Oil questions... and I Need to watch dealership...
I just realized that even using conventional oil it will cost $70+ for the oil plus the cost of a filter for an oil change... the dealership I got the truck from included free oil changes for the first year. I think I may have to watch them to make sure they use new 15W 40 instead of recycling in used 10W 40! I will be adding Rev X for as long as the dealership is doing changes because they will get the cheapest conventional oil they can find.
After the first year I will be doing my own oil changes, and I am trying to figure out if I am better off with $70 worth of conventional oil plus $65 in Rev X ($135.00 plus filter) or if I would be better off with Royal purple for $110.00 for 4 gallons and no Rev X...
I have done oil analysis on cars where I was running E-85 to check for oil contamination / thinning due to the ethanol, but I would rather gain from the communities exeriance rather than experimenting too much on my own.
I know wisdom here says oil change every 5,000 miles. Is that regardless of oil type or different between conventional and synthetic? I do extended changes in my gasoline vehicles... but I don't have soot in my oil on them
Also, does short interval filter changes (2 filter changes per oil cycle) extend oil life?

Wisdom? More like wive's tale. Honestly, Ford says 7500 miles for oil changes, on conventional oil. I have no idea why so many guys do theirs at 5000 miles. Look at this thread:

I documented a 7700 mile oil analysis, and a 10,000 mile oil analysis on Rotella T conventional 15W40 oil ($63 for a 5 gallon bucket at Wally World). The numbers speak for themselves. I used to change my oil at 7500 miles, after seeing my OAs, I'll be doing it at 10K until the numbers say otherwise.

Oh yeah, unless your running in a cold environment, the 5W40 is going to break WAY down in viscosity. The synthetic OAs that I have seen were 5W40 and their viscosity numbers were MUCH lower than 15W40. Something to think about.

Several different questions in your OP I'll try to answer.
Extended intervals are not going to gain you much in the long run. OA has shown the 6.0 will shear oil down pretty fast. The key becomes regular maintenance with quality filters. You could choose a by-pass oil filter setup to help filter but it has not been shown to increase oil life.
I run my intervals at 7500-10k miles. 10k is for emergency situations were I need to travel or work before I can do the oil change. I have used synthetics since clocking 20k miles on the truck. I recommend Mobil 1, Rot T6, Valvoline Extreme Blur and Delo 400 LE. All those oils have given my excellent results when used. I use a by-pass oil filter as well. With 230K on my original injectors I think my plan is working just fine.

I have been changing the oil in my PSD every 5,000 miles mainly because I figured I fell into that "extreme use" classification when I was running hotshot freight and hauling horses in the mountains of Montana. With the cost of T-6 and filters it is getting pretty expensive to change it every 5,000 especially since I am not doing any heavy hauling now. It has 179,XXX and I just changed the oil a couple thousand ago. Think I will run this one to the 7,500 limit and get an analysis done.
