Default 4 wheel drive possible issue?

First time my wife got behind the wheel, she drove the truck 10 feet and into our yard... did I mention it has been raining for the past two days? So, when I hear the engine reving up I was like "what is she doing"??? (I did NOT say to park in the yard) so I go out and she is stuck.

I put it into 4WD high, and the dash light for 4X4 came on, but it didn't seem to affect anything... still stuck with just the back wheel spinning. I saw in the thread "4X4" someone said you should be moving when you engage 4WD high... is this why it didn't do anything or is something wrong with my 4WD system?

Thanks,

Keith

Were you already stuck? I am trying to find out if front wheels have to turn to lock into 4WD mode.

OK, any easy way to check for vacuum leaks? I have zero experience with part time 4WD systems.

Pretty sure your defrost will come on when you switch it to 4wd. Mine did but I put it on floor air first.

I have manual heat and AC controls... I assume you have the automatic?

Reading in the owners manual today, and it specifies putting the transmission in Neutral when going into 4 LOW, but not for 4 HIGH... I had it in park while trying to go into 4 HIGH the other night, was that my issue? I put it into 4 low today, and I know that the transfer case shifted over, but I was on pavement so not sure if the hubs engaged properly. Also, in the owners manual it said that sometimes shifting to 4X4 when stopped will not work, so that may have been the issue.

How do I test the 4WD without getting my *** stuck again? I could put it into 4X4 low and drive into the yard... but if the hubs are not engaging I would end up stuck.

Any test methods that don't involve driving into a swamp?

Turn your heat on and with fan on high, have it coming out at feet or vents that face you, then put it in 4x4 high, i it goes to the defrost vents then you have a vaccum leak, doesn't matter if you have the high tech heat system or the manual type. There is a sticky at top of the 6.0 section with videos of how to diagnose and repair the system.

I always put mine in N before shifting to 2x4 or 4x4. You can put it in 4wd and drive on dirt or rocks. Wouldn't do it on pavement tho.

Ahhh, got it. Did this test, and no vacuum leak.
