Intermitant loss of power

Intermitant loss of power
I just pruchased a used f350 6.0 lariet dually ( 4mos ago). It had 97,000 miles on it and seemed to run great ( The vehicle was chiped the banks six gun tuner ). It now has 103,000 miles on it, I've added rev x to the oil at the last oil change and a S and B cia.
All of a sudden and I've encountered a wierd intermintant power loss - meaning only twice.
a) once I was driving 45 mph and all of a sudden I had no pedal ( 1 wk ago)
b) today I was going 10 mph and had no pedal response with black smoke.
I stopped the truck and waited 1 min before restarting.I still had no pedal so I shifted in l, with no response still. Then I shifted to D and the turbo kicked back in and the truck ran great as always. I'm at a loss of what to do. The mechanics around here always give a different answer and want me to all lot of expensive changes to the motor without - I feel a real diagnosis.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried putting it on a scanner to see if any codes come up? Even if there isn't a check engine light there can still be codes stored, I'd start there.
Could be a few things from what you're describing though. Turbo probably needs a cleaning for starters, you can find that process here: DTS Articles - Turbocharger Reconditioning

Well... most of the handheld tuners can double as code readers, so that's what I use... just for reading codes. However, if you want to step it up and get something that can actually diagnose what you're truck is doing and monitor some things and run some tests... AutoEnginuity with enhanced Ford bundle. It runs about $360, and you need a labtop. It's the best bang for the buck out there. It will do pretty much everything the fancy multi-thousand dollar scanners that your dealer uses does.

I took my truck to a mechanic that was recommended to me today. I had him pull the codes on my truck and he discovered a tcp code and two injector problems, but after running a full diagnostics on the engine
(via his scan tool) everything looked good. He feels that after I install my egr delete the truck should run good (egr delete from RCD). I feel he might be correct because I went home and cleaned the egr valve and the truck run good. I have a appointment tomorow for the delete and keep you posted.
Thanks for your insight...

You mean ICP? Could be the ICP sensor going out.
If you open the hood, look at the passenger side valve cover, see if the ICP sensor is there. It literally threads right through the valve cover. If it's not there, you have an early 04 and it's back behind the turbo with the IPR. It's a VERY Common issue on 03/early 04's for the ICP sensor to act up. It will leak oil sometimes and corrode the wires. If your ICP sensor is back there, I bet it needs the sensor and the pigtail.
