Engine temp gets hot in city traffic
Quick question,
My engine temp gets hot (up to 238) in city traffic but as soon as I can get on freeway - or open it up to about 55 mph it drops down to 180ish.
vehicle is 04 f350 6.0, mods are edge juice platinum tuner, mbrp performance exhaust and air intake.
I have been averaging 18.6 ish mph in city and hwy (about 16 in town and 20 on hwy).
This is my daily driver, it is not at dually and have not towed anything with it as of yet.
I have been playing around with the tuner but usually leave it on the performance setting.
Just looking for ideas of what is causing it to get hot in the city traffic.

Is that oil or coolant temp? Monitor oil and coolant temp together, they shouldn't go more than 15* apart. If they do, you need to rebuild the oil cooler (this is the root cause of what causes blown egr coolers and blown headgaskets, so nip it in the bud before it becomes a larger issue).
Where's your coolant level at? The "MIN" line on the bottle is the new "max" line. Is your fan kicking on when it gets that hot?
Any other mods on the truck? EGR delete?

Coolant temp
Thanks for the reply. It is the coolant temp that is getting that hot. The oil temp is staying under 215. Not sure why the coolant temp is getting so high.
This truck has spent most of its life in Colorado but less than 5,000 miles ago moved to north Carolina - Sandhills region.
No other mods that I have found yet. Lol.

Think I figured it out. Posting this out of moral obligation in case someone else has the same issue.

Bobfbigman's question about the EGR valve being plugged in got me digging around under the hood. Erg was plugged in, I was checking bc I had the the vehicle coolant system flushed not long ago and was checking around to see if anything got disconnected, unplugged, or what ever. Turns out local ford dealership, flushed the radiator and did not get it filled all the way back up. The resevior was bone dry. So a few gallons of peak later and no more overheating. Go figure. All day yesterday and today, it maintained 160-186 at highest (both oil temp and coolant temp) and neither ever being more than 4-6 degrees difference.
What I am guessing happend, when they flushed the radiator and filled it back up, they did not let the engine cycle the coolant through then check levels again. Just a guess though. I will post again on this topic in about a week. If no more issues, then close it up. Thanks for all the help though all. I learned alot about preventive maintenance and things to watch out for in the future.
